Oberwesel, located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, offers excellent accessibility for the atmospheric "Rhine in Flames" events, with the ship piers centrally located in the Rhine facilities and featuring no complex terminal structures.

Car

Oberwesel is conveniently located directly on the Rhine via the B9 federal road. From the north or south, you can reach the town thanks to quick connections via the A61 motorway (Laudert or Pfalzfeld exits). Various public parking options are available in Oberwesel for "Rhine in Flames," including along the B9 and an underground car park at Schaarplatz. Please note, however, that parking in the town center is limited and the B9 will be closed to traffic during the event in the evening hours (approx. 19:00 to 23:00), which is why early arrival is strongly recommended. Free bus and car parking spaces will be designated by marshals on the day of the event.

Train

Oberwesel station is a convenient arrival point, located directly on the left Rhine line between Koblenz and Mainz. It is served by the MittelrheinBahn (MRB) and the RegionalExpress (RE), offering comfortable connections from the region. From there, you can enjoy a relaxed walk of about 10 minutes to the landing stages in the Rhine facilities.

Airplane

The nearest major airport is Frankfurt am Main (FRA), around 76 kilometers away. From there, excellent train connections to Oberwesel exist, with a journey time of about one hour and a direct connection to Oberwesel station. Alternatively, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) is in regional proximity but requires a longer transfer time by bus and train. For a relaxed arrival to "Rhine in Flames," especially for international flights, an overnight stay in the region is often recommended due to the late evening event.

Burg Schönburg

The majestic Burg Schönburg towers high above Oberwesel and can be reached from the ship pier in about twenty minutes on foot via a picturesque climb or comfortably by taxi. This historic complex offers one of the most impressive panoramic views of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley and is the perfect place to admire the medieval architecture as well as the vastness of the river landscape. The castle also features excellent gastronomy with a beautiful terrace, where you can enjoy regional specialties and first-class wines in a stately atmosphere. Ideally, visit the castle in the early afternoon to experience the peaceful atmosphere before the evening hustle and bustle of Rhine in Flames and return to the ship relaxed and in time to prepare for the nightly festivities.

Returning to the ship

The way back to your cruise ship in Oberwesel is particularly straightforward thanks to the central location of the docking points and the excellent signage during the Rhein in Flammen event. You can comfortably reach your berth within a few minutes' walk from the venues in the city center or along the Rhine promenade.

On foot

Since the jetties are located directly in front of the historic city wall on the banks of the Rhine, you can simply stroll back to the ship after the fireworks through one of the prominent city gates, such as the Ochsenturmtor. The paths along Rheinstraße are brightly lit during the event and offer a safe environment for the short walk thanks to the high presence of stewards and security personnel.

Taxi

If you spent the evening in the higher vineyards or at the Schönburg, you will find taxis directly at the market square or at Oberwesel station. In addition, local hotels in the city center are happy to assist with ordering a vehicle to take you safely and directly to the docking points on the B9.

Train and regional buses

Oberwesel station is located just a few hundred meters north of the ship docks and serves as an ideal landmark for guests returning from neighboring towns in the UNESCO World Heritage site. Level paths lead directly from the platforms to the riverbank, ensuring you reach your ship on time before departure while enjoying the view of the illuminated scenery.
