Portland, located on the majestic Jurassic Coast in Dorset, is a fascinating gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern England. The rugged beauty of the limestone peninsula combines dramatic cliffs with maritime heritage and offers an incomparable panorama thanks to breathtaking views of the English Channel. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the historic Portland Castle, the iconic Portland Bill Lighthouse, and the impressive Chesil Beach. Cruise ships dock at the modern Portland Port at Britannia Pier, and a comfortable shuttle service takes travelers to charming Weymouth, located about six kilometers away, which also provides direct access to the diverse coastal region.
The Portland cruise port on the spectacular Jurassic Coast in southern England is easily accessible thanks to its connection to regional transport hubs. Operations take place at the central Portland Port, which is directly connected to the mainland via the Portland Beach Road causeway.
Airplane
For guests from the DACH region, London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the preferred destination, as it offers numerous direct connections and is located approximately 200 kilometers from the port. Alternatively, Bristol Airport (BRS) is available about 115 kilometers away, from where the journey to the terminal can be comfortably continued via private transfer or rental car via the A37 and A354.
Train
The nearest long-distance railway station is located in Weymouth, which is regularly served from London Waterloo with a travel time of around three hours. From Weymouth station, you can reach the cruise terminal in about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or use the shuttle buses provided by the cruise lines, which take you directly to the ship.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the distance from the major airports and for a relaxed start to your vacation, an overnight stay in the adjacent seaside resort of Weymouth or directly on the Isle of Portland is recommended. This also provides the opportunity to explore the World Heritage site of the Jurassic Coast and check in at the terminal the next morning promptly and without time pressure thanks to the short transfer routes.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
