Port information & tips for Port of Tyne (Newcastle)

In the immediate vicinity of the port, the imposing Tynemouth Priory and Castle as well as the charming North Shields Fish Quay invite discovery. Cruise ships dock at the International Passenger Terminal in North Shields, from where the vibrant city center of Newcastle, with the historic Newcastle Castle and the iconic bridges, is easily accessible in about 20 minutes thanks to excellent connections by shuttle bus or Metro.
The Port of Tyne in Newcastle, a modern and well-equipped cruise port, is located approximately 13 to 14.5 kilometers east of Newcastle city center in North Shields. It is easily accessible for travelers from the DACH region thanks to its good transport links and offers a single, clearly laid out International Passenger Terminal.
Car
The port is excellently connected to the road network and is directly accessible via the A1 and A19 motorways. Travelers follow the signs for North Shields and then the A187 to the International Passenger Terminal. Secure long-term parking is available at the terminal, which is often within walking distance or offers a shuttle service to the terminal. Costs are around £18 to £19.25 per night, and advance reservation, often via the cruise line, is recommended as capacity is limited.
Train
The central arrival station for rail travelers is Newcastle Central Station, which offers excellent connections throughout the United Kingdom. From there to the terminal, which is about 15 kilometers away, taxis are a convenient option, with a travel time of around 18 to 30 minutes. Alternatively, travelers can take the Metro to Percy Main station, from where a bus or a 20-30 minute walk leads to the terminal. Some ferry companies, such as DFDS, also offer shuttle buses from the main station directly to the terminal, which are timed to coincide with arrival and departure times.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Newcastle International Airport (NCL), located about 22 to 24 kilometers from the Port of Tyne. The journey by taxi or private transfer from the airport to the terminal takes approximately 22 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic. Private transfer services can be booked in advance to ensure a smooth transition. For a relaxed embarkation, especially after long-haul flights from the DACH region, it is recommended to arrive the day before and stay overnight in one of the nearby hotels.
