Port information & tips for Kalocsa
Kalocsa is a fascinating jewel in the Hungarian Puszta and is considered one of the oldest and most significant cultural centers in the country. The city on the banks of the Danube impresses with its baroque charm, the world-renowned tradition of paprika cultivation, and magnificent architecture. Cultural highlights include the majestic St. Mary's Cathedral, the grand Archbishop's Palace, and the informative Paprika Museum, which brings the history of "red gold" to life. River cruise ships dock at the Kalocsa pier, which is idyllically located near the village of Foktő. Thanks to short shuttle connections, visitors reach the historic city center, about five kilometers away, in just a few minutes and simultaneously enjoy direct access to the famous horse shows of the Puszta region.
Kalocsa, the charming paprika capital of Hungary, is a popular port of call for Danube river cruises. The port is idyllically situated on the left bank of the Danube, approximately 7 kilometers outside the city center, which river cruise guests can easily reach via cruise line transfer.
Car
For those arriving by car from the DACH region, the route usually leads through Austria and then onto well-developed Hungarian trunk roads. From Budapest, you can reach Kalocsa directly via the M6 motorway heading south, followed by the M8 and Main Road 51. The driving time from Budapest is about 1 hour and 48 minutes for the approximately 123 to 124 kilometer long route. Parking is available at the port itself, and local parking spaces for short-term and long-term parkers can also be found in Kalocsa.
Airplane
The nearest international airport for travelers from the DACH region is Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD). It is the central hub of Hungary and offers numerous direct connections from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Budapest Airport (BUD) is approximately 100 to 140 kilometers away from Kalocsa.
Transfer & Pre-Cruise Hotel
A variety of transfer options to Kalocsa are available from Budapest Airport (BUD). A bus connection with a transfer at the Népliget bus station in Budapest takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes to reach Kalocsa. Alternatively, private taxi and shuttle services offer a comfortable direct journey lasting around 1 hour and 48 minutes. For a relaxed start to your river cruise, especially after an international flight, we recommend an overnight stay in one of the many hotels in Budapest on the day before embarkation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan accordingly and allow sufficient time for your journey to the port, keeping in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
