Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the impressive Fort Delgrès with its fascinating history as well as the lively Marché de Basse-Terre, which offers local specialties. In addition, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Guadeloupe is a popular destination thanks to its striking architecture. Cruise ships dock at the central Gare Maritime, allowing guests to conveniently reach Cours Nolivos and the historic city center on foot in just a few minutes.
The port of Basse-Terre on Guadeloupe, a picturesque port of call on the island of the same name, welcomes cruise ships directly on the north coast of the capital. It serves exclusively as a port of call; passengers beginning or ending their cruise in Guadeloupe usually do so at the Centre Saint-John Perse cruise terminal in Pointe-à-Pitre on Grande-Terre. The terminal in Basse-Terre allows for easy access to the city center, which is only about a ten-minute walk away.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region is primarily via Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport (PTP), also known as Pôle Caraïbes Airport, on the neighboring island of Grande-Terre. Direct connections to PTP are available from major European hubs such as Paris. The airport is located approximately 63 kilometers from Basse-Terre. Due to the long flight time, an overnight stay on Grande-Terre is recommended for travelers whose cruise starts in Pointe-à-Pitre or who wish to explore the island beforehand.
Transfer Options
From Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport (PTP), you can easily reach Basse-Terre by taxi. The journey takes about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxi rides on Guadeloupe can be more expensive, especially outside the cities, although fixed prices between major locations allow for better planning. Alternatively, private transfer services offer comfortable transportation directly to your destination in Basse-Terre. While bus connections do exist, they are less suitable for tourists with a lot of luggage, and the bus network is less dense compared to European standards.
Car Rental & Local Exploration
For maximum flexibility when exploring the lush island of Basse-Terre, a rental car is recommended. Major car rental companies are located at Pointe-à-Pitre Airport (PTP) or in the city of Basse-Terre itself, though a short taxi ride to the pick-up station may be necessary. The road network on Guadeloupe is well-developed and allows for scenic drives along the coast or through the national park. Special long-term parking for cruise guests ("Park & Cruise") is not common at the port of Basse-Terre, as it serves as a port of call.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
