Cruise port Puerto Plata

Port information & tips for Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata on the glittering north coast of the Dominican Republic is known as the "Amber Coast" and captivates with a fascinating blend of colonial elegance and tropical joie de vivre. The city delights visitors with its charming flair, pastel-colored Victorian-style houses, and an impressive mountain backdrop directly on the Atlantic. Top-tier highlights include the historic Fortaleza San Felipe, the cable car to Mount Isabel de Torres, and the vibrant Parque Central. Cruise ships dock at the modern Taino Bay terminal, located right on the edge of the historic old town, which, thanks to its central location, allows for a convenient walk directly to the most important sights, shops, and the picturesque Malecon.

Puerto Plata welcomes cruise guests at two modern terminals, Amber Cove and Taino Bay, which form the ideal starting point for journeys through the Caribbean. While the Taino Bay terminal is located directly at the historic city center, Amber Cove is situated about 12 kilometers west in the picturesque bay of Maimón.

Airplane

The Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) is located only about 20 to 30 minutes away from the terminals and is regularly served by direct flights from Frankfurt am Main by Condor. Alternatively, Santiago Airport (STI) is an option, located about 90 minutes away and opening up additional connection possibilities via international hubs.

Transfer & Shuttle

Further travel from the airport is convenient with pre-booked shuttle services or official taxis, which are based on fixed rates. Thanks to the well-developed Carretera 5 highway, travelers reach both terminals in a short time; additionally, many cruise lines offer coordinated transfer buses directly at the airport for their guests.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long flight duration and the time difference, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended. In the nearby region of Playa Dorada or directly in Puerto Plata, you will find numerous hotels and resorts that allow for a relaxed start to your vacation and often offer practical packages including port transfers.
