Port information & tips for Cabo Rojo
Cabo Rojo is the new, untouched gem of the Dominican Republic, welcoming travelers to the wild and romantic province of Pedernales in the far southwest of the island. This destination impresses with a spectacular natural backdrop characterized by striking red cliffs, crystal-clear water, and paradisiacal tranquility. Absolute highlights include the world-famous Bahía de las Águilas beach with its powdery white sand, the species-rich Jaragua National Park, and the Laguna de Oviedo. Cruise ships dock directly at the modern Port Cabo Rojo terminal, which is designed as a high-quality experience center and offers an ideal starting point thanks to its prime location. The authentic city center of Pedernales is also easily reachable in about 20 minutes, perfectly combining nature experiences with local flair.
Cabo Rojo is the newest cruise port in the Dominican Republic and impresses with its location in the pristine province of Pedernales on the southwest coast. Thanks to its direct pier connection and generous leisure facilities, the modern terminal offers a comfortable start into the region's untouched nature.
Airplane
Aeropuerto Internacional de Las Américas (SDQ) in Santo Domingo is the main hub for guests from the DACH region and is served regularly by direct flights or via European hubs. Further travel to Cabo Rojo, which is about 310 kilometers away, is usually via organized transfers; additionally, a new international airport directly on-site in Pedernales is currently under active expansion for future direct connections.
Transfer & Shuttle
The journey to the port takes you along the scenic Autopista 6 de Noviembre and Route 44, which connects Barahona with the port region and is currently undergoing extensive modernization. Due to the travel time of about five to six hours from Santo Domingo, air-conditioned shuttle buses from the cruise lines or private transfers represent the most comfortable connection to the terminal and simultaneously guarantee a relaxed drive through the Caribbean landscape.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the remote location and the long flight time from Europe, an overnight stay in Santo Domingo or in one of the coastal hotels near Barahona is recommended before embarkation. Many guests take the opportunity for a stay in the historic capital, especially since new resort hotels from international chains will soon open in the immediate vicinity of the port of Cabo Rojo, further increasing comfort for travelers.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
