Port information & tips for Freeport
Freeport on Grand Bahama is a versatile paradise that impressively combines modern amenities with untouched nature. The atmosphere is characterized by endless powder-sugar beaches, crystal-clear water, and a relaxed island vibe that immediately evokes holiday feelings. Absolute highlights include the lively Port Lucaya Marketplace with its colorful shops and restaurants, as well as the idyllic Garden of the Groves and the dreamlike Taino Beach. Cruise ships dock at the modern Lucayan Harbour Cruise Facility, which is located about ten kilometers from the center. Thanks to the available shuttle buses and taxis, guests can reach the central sights and the coast in a short time while enjoying a comfortable connection to the heart of the island.
The port of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island is a major hub for Caribbean cruises due to its strategic location and can be easily reached via the international airport or by ship from Florida. The terminal in Lucayan Harbour is efficiently organized and serves as an ideal starting point for journeys through the islands of the Bahamas.
Airplane
Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) is located approximately 10 kilometers from the cruise port and is usually served from the DACH region with a stopover in Miami (MIA), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), or Nassau (NAS). The journey from the airport to the terminal takes about 15 minutes by taxi or private shuttle and, thanks to the short distances, allows for a swift start to your vacation.
Ferry
For guests wishing to combine their cruise with a stay in Florida, the high-speed ferry from Balearia Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale offers an attractive arrival option. The crossing to Lucayan Harbour takes about three hours and ends directly in the port area, making the transfer between the USA and the Bahamas particularly comfortable for international travelers.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight duration from Europe, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation and staying overnight in the resorts of Port Lucaya or in central hotels in Freeport. These properties often offer a relaxed atmosphere for acclimatization and are only about 15 to 20 minutes by car from the cruise terminal, with licensed taxis providing reliable connections at regulated fixed prices.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
