Port information & tips for Slate Island

The Slate Islands in Lake Superior are a spectacular natural paradise and an exclusive insider tip for expedition cruises in Canada. The untouched archipelago fascinates with its rugged wilderness and its origin as a massive meteorite crater, creating a unique backdrop for explorers. Highlights include sightings of the rare woodland caribou as well as visits to the historic Slate Islands Lighthouse and the impressive geological shatter cones. As there is no conventional terminal, ships use the sheltered anchorage in Sunday Harbour. From here, guests can easily reach the coast of Patterson Island directly by Zodiac, allowing them to experience the secluded beauty of the Provincial Park immediately and in harmony with nature without long transfer distances.

The Slate Islands in Canada are not a traditional cruise port with extensive terminals, but rather a pristine archipelago in Lake Superior, primarily visited by expedition cruises and adventurers. Arrival for guests from the DACH region therefore focuses on the mainland gateway communities, from which boat transfers to the islands are offered.

Airplane

Travel to the Slate Islands usually begins with a flight to the nearest major airport, Thunder Bay International Airport (YQT) in Ontario. This is located approximately 200 kilometers west of Terrace Bay, the primary starting point for boat transfers to the islands. Due to the long journey from Europe, an overnight stay on the mainland before embarkation is highly recommended.

Arrival at the Mainland

From Thunder Bay International Airport (YQT), you can reach Terrace Bay or Rossport by rental car or arranged shuttle. The drive to Terrace Bay takes about 2 to 2.5 hours via the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 17). Limited parking is available in Terrace Bay, often in connection with the boat transfer providers.

Boat Transfer to the Island

The Slate Islands are exclusively accessible by boat or seaplane. Charter boats and shuttle services operate mainly from Terrace Bay or Rossport. This crossing over Lake Superior covers about 10-12 kilometers and requires booking a specialized provider due to potentially unpredictable weather conditions. There are no fixed terminals or facilities directly on the islands, as it is a provincial park.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a specific time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.

Arrival at the Slate Islands in Lake Superior usually takes place directly via anchor stop and tender boat in one of the calm bays, thanks to the sheltered location. From the landing site, the pristine wilderness of the archipelago and the provincial park can be easily explored.

Zodiacs and Tender Boats

Transportation from the ship to the shore is conveniently provided by the ship's own Zodiacs or tender boats. These land at natural shore sections and allow direct access to the hiking trails as well as the striking geological formations of the islands.

On Foot

Exploration of the islands is done exclusively on foot and offers safe orientation in nature thanks to the clearly visible paths. The trails lead directly through the arctic-alpine flora while simultaneously providing excellent opportunities for observing the native woodland caribou.

Water Taxis and Shuttle

Private water taxis connect the islands with the mainland port of Terrace Bay if required. At the pier there, taxis are also available for onward travel to the town center or to other excursion destinations along the Trans-Canada Highway.

To experience the untouched wilderness of the Slate Islands at its best, it is recommended to focus on the unique wildlife and the fascinating geological traces of the archipelago.

Patterson Island

The largest island in the archipelago invites you to hike through dense primeval forests and, thanks to the woodland caribou resident there, offers a rare opportunity to spot these majestic animals in their natural environment.

Slate Islands Lighthouse

The striking beacon on the south coast is an iconic destination for explorers and, thanks to its exposed location, offers a breathtaking panoramic view across the vast waters of Lake Superior.

Shatter Cones

These extraordinary rock formations are the visible result of a prehistoric meteorite impact and can be ideally admired during an exploration tour along the shorelines; they also illustrate the fascinating history of how this natural paradise was formed.

Slate Islands Lighthouse & Caribou Observation

The historic lighthouse on Patterson Island is easily accessible after a short ride on the ship's own tender boat and offers visitors a wide panoramic view over the rugged coastlines of Lake Superior. This location also provides the perfect opportunity to discover the rare population of woodland caribou in their natural environment and to experience the impressive geological history of the meteorite crater first-hand. Thanks to the original trails and the peaceful atmosphere of the archipelago, you can enjoy an excellent nature experience far away from any hustle and bustle. Ideally, use the early morning hours for your shore excursion to observe the wildlife in its most active phase, and return to the ship at midday in a relaxed manner to watch the departure through the island world from the deck.

The return journey to the landing point on the Slate Islands is straightforward and safe, thanks to the clear organization provided by the expedition team.

Water Taxis

As there are no roads on the islands, water taxis from nearby Terrace Bay serve as an important link for the return journey to the ship. These boats dock directly at the marked beach sections and bring you comfortably and punctually back to your cruise ship's mooring.

Zodiac Shuttle

The ship's own Zodiacs shuttle at short intervals between the shore of Patterson Island and your ship. Thanks to fixed schedules and coordination by the staff on site, you can get back on board from the beach easily and safely at any time.

On Foot

The hiking trails on the islands lead in a star shape back to the central meeting point at the lighthouse or the former fishing village. The paths are clear and easy to walk; additionally, the prominent lighthouse provides perfect orientation for the direct return path to the landing site.
