Port information & tips for Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada and welcomes travelers with its unmistakable maritime charm as well as a picturesque backdrop of rolling hills and red sandstone cliffs. In Charlottetown, visitors can expect a relaxed atmosphere characterized by Victorian architecture and warm hospitality. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the historic Province House National Historic Site, the lively Victoria Row pedestrian zone, and the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Cruise ships dock at the modern Port Charlottetown on the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront. Thanks to this central location, the historic old town, cozy cafes, and first-class seafood restaurants are easily accessible within just a few minutes' walk, making the stay particularly pleasant for guests.
The capital Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island welcomes cruise guests to a centrally located port that provides convenient access to the historic downtown area. Ships dock directly at the terminal, making the charming city immediately explorable on foot.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Charlottetown Airport (YYG), located only about 7 to 8 kilometers north of the cruise port. Seasonal direct flights connect Charlottetown with major Canadian metropolises such as Halifax, Montreal, and Toronto, which facilitates travel from the DACH region via these hubs. A taxi ride from the airport to the port costs approximately 20 CAD and takes only a few minutes.
Car & Parking
Arrival by car is possible thanks to the Confederation Bridge, which connects Prince Edward Island with the Canadian mainland (New Brunswick) via the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1). A fee of around 50 CAD is due upon departing the island. Free public parking is available directly at Port Charlottetown behind the Mi'Kmaq Confederacy building. In addition, the Peakes Wharf Parking Lot near the harbor offers hourly parking options.
Transfer & Pre-Cruise Hotel
From Charlottetown Airport (YYG), you can easily reach the port or your hotel by taxi or rideshare service (such as Kari or Uride). Given the long flight times from the DACH region, we recommend staying overnight in one of the centrally located hotels in Charlottetown the day before embarkation to start your cruise relaxed. Many accommodations are within walking distance of the terminal.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
