Port information & tips for Grand Manan Island
Grand Manan Island is a hidden gem in the spectacular Bay of Fundy, enchanting visitors with its untouched nature and the authentic charm of the Canadian Maritimes. The island impresses with dramatic cliffs, picturesque fishing villages, and the world's highest tides, which create a unique backdrop for wildlife viewing. Highlights include the iconic Swallowtail Lighthouse, the impressive Hole-in-the-Wall rock formation, and the informative Grand Manan Museum, all of which showcase the region's fascinating history. Cruise ships usually anchor offshore, while guests arrive at the North Head Wharf via tender boats. This central landing point is located directly in the village of North Head, making the charming cafes and hiking trails easily accessible on foot.
Grand Manan Island is a unique cruise port as arrival is primarily via a ferry connection from mainland New Brunswick. Although there are no large, dedicated cruise terminals on the island, Grand Manan is prepared to welcome cruise guests, typically via tender services.
Airplane
For guests from the DACH region, the starting point is the nearest commercial airport, Saint John Airport (YSJ) in New Brunswick. From there, the drive to the ferry terminal in Blacks Harbour is approximately 95 kilometers, which takes about 1 hour and 6 minutes. There are no direct flights from the DACH region to YSJ; instead, connecting flights usually go through major Canadian hubs such as Toronto or Montreal.
Car & Ferry
Travel to the Blacks Harbour ferry terminal on the mainland is easy via Trans-Canada Highway 1. Take Exit 60 and then follow Route 176 for about 10 kilometers directly to the ferry pier. The ferry crossing with Coastal Transport Limited from Blacks Harbour to North Head on Grand Manan Island takes about 1.5 hours and offers a scenic introduction to the Bay of Fundy. Short- and long-term parking is available at the Blacks Harbour ferry terminal; many visitors leave their vehicles there and explore the island without a car. A ferry reservation is strongly recommended, especially in the summer months, and arriving 45 minutes before departure is advisable.
Pre-Cruise Stay
Due to the long international flight from the DACH region and the need to use the ferry connection to Grand Manan Island, a pre-cruise stay is recommended. An overnight stay on the mainland, for example in Saint John or in the immediate vicinity of the ferry terminal in Blacks Harbour, allows for a relaxed journey to the ship and ensures a stress-free start to your cruise experience.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
