Arctic Bay, also known as Ikpiarjuk, is a fascinating destination at the northern tip of Baffin Island and is one of the most picturesque communities in the Canadian Arctic. The settlement impresses with its spectacular location on the Uluksan Fjord, where majestic cliffs and glittering icebergs create an incomparable wilderness atmosphere. Since larger ships anchor in the protected bay, guests reach the central beach area near the Government Dock directly by Zodiac. From this landing point, visitors can easily reach the village center on foot and enjoy a direct connection to the untouched nature and warm community life thanks to the short distances.

Arrival by car or train is not possible, as there are no road or rail connections. Cruises calling at Arctic Bay are typically expedition voyages, for which arrival and logistics are comprehensively organized by the cruise lines.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Arctic Bay Airport (YAB), a small regional airport primarily served from Iqaluit (YFB), the capital of Nunavut. International travelers from the DACH region typically fly via larger Canadian cities such as Montreal (YUL) or Ottawa (YOW) to Iqaluit and from there continue on smaller aircraft to Arctic Bay. The flight time from Iqaluit to Arctic Bay is approximately 2 hours. Due to the long journey and remote location, multi-day travel planning with stopovers is strongly recommended.
Logistics & Transfer
Since Arctic Bay is very remote and offers no regular taxi or shuttle services, the transfer from YAB airport to the ship's anchorage is usually organized by the respective cruise line and is often part of the travel package. Passengers are typically picked up from the airport and brought by Zodiac or tender boat to the expedition ship anchored in the bay. Individual arrival at the ship terminal is not intended here and requires detailed arrangements with the cruise line.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Stopovers
Due to the complex and long journey from Europe, an overnight stay in a major Canadian city such as Montreal or Ottawa, as well as a further stopover in Iqaluit (YFB) before the onward flight to Arctic Bay, is essential. Cruise lines often recommend spending at least one to two nights in Iqaluit or another Canadian city before actual embarkation to cushion against weather-related delays on connecting flights and to start the Arctic expedition in a relaxed manner. There is a limited number of hotels in Iqaluit.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
