Port information & tips for Stornoway (Isle of Lewis)
Stornoway is the charming main town of the Isle of Lewis and the gateway to the wild and romantic Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The port city delights with its authentic Gaelic culture, the salty sea breeze, and a picturesque backdrop of historic buildings and rolling green hills. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the majestic Lews Castle with its extensive parkland, as well as the Museum nan Eilean, which offers fascinating insights into the island's history and the famous Lewis Chessmen. Cruise ships dock at the modern Stornoway Deep Water Terminal, which, thanks to a comfortable shuttle service, provides a convenient connection to the city center about five kilometers away, while simultaneously serving as an ideal starting point for exploring the rugged nature.
The port of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis is excellently prepared for large cruise ships thanks to the modern Deep Water Terminal at Arnish Point and is located only a few kilometers from the city center. Arriving from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland is comfortable thanks to coordinated flight and ferry connections and offers a direct entry into the world of the Outer Hebrides.
Airplane
Stornoway Airport (SYY) is located about six kilometers east of the port and is served several times daily from the airports of Glasgow (GLA), Edinburgh (EDI), and Inverness (INV). Travelers from the DACH region can easily reach the island via these hubs and can get from the airport to the cruise terminal within ten minutes by taxi or local buses.
Ferry & Car
Arrival by car typically takes place via the Scottish Highlands and the ferry connection operated by Caledonian MacBrayne from Ullapool. Via the A9 and A835 trunk roads, you reach the ferry pier on the mainland, from which you cross directly into the sheltered natural harbor of Stornoway in around two and a half hours. Parking facilities and car rental stations are available at the terminal for further exploration of the island.

Due to the island's exposed location and to provide a buffer for any weather-related delays, arriving the day before the cruise is highly recommended. Charming accommodations are available in Stornoway in close proximity to the port, allowing for a stress-free check-in and also providing time to visit the impressive Lews Castle or the historic Standing Stones of Callanish.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
