The nearest international airport is Glasgow Airport (GLA), approximately 38 to 40 kilometers from Wemyss Bay, the main ferry port to the mainland. The travel time by car or taxi from GLA to Wemyss Bay is around 34 to 40 minutes, with taxi services potentially costing around 41 to 51 pounds. For further travel by public transport, first take a bus (e.g., line 77) from the airport to Paisley Gilmour Street station and then a ScotRail train to Wemyss Bay. The total train journey, including the transfer, takes about 1 hour and 21 to 28 minutes. From Wemyss Bay, the ferry takes you directly to Rothesay in about 35 minutes. Upon arrival from the DACH region, an overnight stay in the Glasgow area before embarkation is recommended due to the travel time.
Train
Travelers from the DACH region can easily reach Glasgow Central Station via national and international train connections. From Glasgow Central Station, there is a direct ScotRail train connection on the Inverclyde Line to Wemyss Bay station. The train journey takes about 52 to 55 minutes, and Wemyss Bay station is architecturally impressive and directly integrated into the ferry terminal. From there, the ferry departs for Rothesay, with the crossing taking around 35 minutes. Ferry tickets are available directly on-site, as no advance booking is required.
Car
Arrival by car is via the Scottish motorway network, with the M8 leading towards Glasgow and from there the A78 directly to the Wemyss Bay ferry terminal. The distance from Glasgow to Wemyss Bay is approximately 33 miles. Parking is available at the Wemyss Bay ferry terminal, but it is recommended to arrive early as parking spaces can be limited, especially in the summer months. An arrival at least 30 minutes before the scheduled ferry departure is advisable. The CalMac ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay takes about 35 minutes for the crossing and runs regularly, usually every 45 to 60 minutes.
