Returning to the ship

Port Ellen on Islay is a charming cruise port on the island's south coast, ideal for travelers from the DACH region looking to explore the Scottish Hebrides. While larger cruise ships generally operate on a tender basis, Port Ellen serves as a central hub with direct access to the island's famous whisky distilleries and impressive nature.

Ferry & Car

For those traveling with their own vehicle, the ferry is the only option to reach Islay. On the Scottish mainland, drive via the A82 to Loch Lomond and then via the A83 to the ferry terminal in Kennacraig. From there, Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) will take you to Port Ellen or Port Askaig in about two relaxed hours. Pre-booking ferry tickets is strongly recommended, especially during high season. In Port Ellen itself, there is limited public parking at the harbor; additionally, a new motorhome park with pitches and amenities has been available near the terminal since spring 2026.

Airplane

The fastest way to reach Islay is by flying to Islay Airport (ILY), also known as Glenegedale Airport. It is located only about 8 kilometers (approx. 5 miles) from Port Ellen. Direct flights to ILY are primarily offered by Loganair from Glasgow International Airport (GLA) and take about 40 to 45 minutes. From the airport, you can easily reach Port Ellen by taxi in about seven minutes (cost approx. £13-£16) or use the 451 bus, which runs hourly and takes you to the center of Port Ellen in about eleven minutes.

Travel Planning & Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the island location and dependence on ferry or flight connections, arriving on Islay at least one day before your scheduled embarkation is recommended. This ensures a relaxed start to your cruise and provides buffer time for unexpected weather events or travel delays. Numerous charming accommodations in Port Ellen and across the island invite you to enjoy Islay's special atmosphere even before your cruise. It is advisable to book taxis on Islay in advance, as availability is limited.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
