Airplane
For travel from the DACH region, Sumburgh Airport (LSI) on Mainland Shetland is the nearest airport. Direct flights are usually available from Scotland's larger airports such as Edinburgh (EDI) or Glasgow (GLA), which in turn are accessible from German, Austrian, and Swiss airports. Sumburgh Airport is located in the south of Mainland Shetland, approximately 40 kilometers from Lerwick, the islands' largest town. To get from Sumburgh Airport to the ferry departure points for Mousa (Sandwick or Leebitton), local bus connections or taxis are recommended. The journey to Sandwick, the main departure point for the Mousa ferry, takes about 20-30 minutes from the airport.
Ferry (with or without car)
Another option is to travel by ferry from Aberdeen on the Scottish mainland to Lerwick, the main town of the Shetland Islands. The shipping company NorthLink Ferries offers regular connections, with the journey taking about 12 to 14 hours, often overnight. This route is particularly suitable if you wish to take your own vehicle to the islands. From Lerwick, you can reach the ferry terminal for Mousa in Sandwick via the A970 main road in approximately 25 minutes.
