Airplane
For travel to Ireland from the DACH region, Kerry Airport (KIR) is the closest airport to Portmagee, approximately 65 to 79 kilometers away. The travel time by car or taxi from there is around 1 hour and 6 minutes. Alternatively, you can fly into the international airports of Cork (ORK) or Shannon (SNN), which are about 120 to 130 kilometers away. From Dublin (DUB), which often offers direct flight connections, the drive to Portmagee takes about five and a half hours. A rental car is highly recommended for the onward journey to the port in Portmagee, as public transport in this rural region is limited and often requires several transfers.
Car
Portmagee is located on the picturesque Iveragh Peninsula and is easily accessible via the N70 national road, part of the famous Ring of Kerry. From Killarney, the R565 leads directly to Portmagee. In the village, there are free public parking spaces at the entrance to the village and by the church. A smaller parking lot directly at the marina can fill up quickly in high season. Be aware of the sometimes narrow roads on the peninsula, which require a relaxed driving pace.

Due to the early departure times of the Skellig Michael boat tours, which usually begin between 8:00 AM and 12:30 PM, and the weather-dependent flexibility, it is highly advisable to spend the night before the tour in Portmagee or on Valentia Island, which is accessible via a bridge. This ensures a punctual arrival at Portmagee Marina, where you should check in with the boat crew at least 15 to 30 minutes before departure. An overnight stay on-site also provides a pleasant buffer time and avoids unnecessary travel stress on the morning of the tour.
