Port information & tips for Dún Laoghaire
Dún Laoghaire is the charming maritime gateway to the Irish capital Dublin and impresses with its picturesque coastal location directly on Dublin Bay. The town welcomes visitors with Victorian elegance, a refreshing sea breeze, and a lively harbor promenade that offers an inviting atmosphere thanks to numerous cafés. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the National Maritime Museum of Ireland and the historic James Joyce Tower & Museum, while a walk along the historic East Pier offers vast views of the Irish Sea. Cruise ships use the centrally located Carlisle Pier, from which the city center is within walking walk, and the DART train also comfortably transports travelers into the vibrant heart of Dublin.
The port of Dún Laoghaire is located about twelve kilometers south of Dublin and offers cruise guests a particularly charming gateway to the Irish capital. While large ships usually lie at anchor in the harbor basin and bring guests directly to the promenade by tender boat, smaller ships dock directly at the historic pier in the heart of the town.
Airplane
Dublin Airport (DUB) is the central arrival point for guests from the DACH region and offers numerous direct connections from Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, and Vienna. The onward journey to the port is very comfortable thanks to the Aircoach (Line 702 or 703), which travels directly to Dún Laoghaire station in around 50 minutes. You can also reach the terminal by taxi via the Dublin Port Tunnel in about 30 to 40 minutes, which allows for a quick connection to local hotels, especially for those arriving the day before.
Train & Public Transport
Thanks to the excellent connection to the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) suburban rail system, the port is perfectly connected to Dublin city center. Dún Laoghaire Mallin station is located just a three-minute walk from the tender boat arrival area and offers connections to the central Dublin Pearse and Dublin Connolly stations every 15 to 20 minutes. This short travel time of about 20 minutes allows travelers to flexibly explore the Irish capital or conveniently arrive from other parts of the country.
Car & Parking
Arriving by car is straightforward via the M50 orbital motorway and the N11 primary route, which connect Dún Laoghaire directly to the national road network. Monitored parking areas are available for cruise guests directly at the port and at Carlisle Pier; additionally, the Pavilion car park in the immediate vicinity of the waterfront offers extra long-term parking spaces. Thanks to good signage and the central location of the parking facilities, you can reach the embarkation area on foot within a few minutes.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
