Port information & tips for Vidin
Vidin is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria and a fascinating destination right on the picturesque banks of the Danube. The charming port city delights visitors with a relaxed atmosphere, lush parks, and thousands of years of history. Absolute highlights include the imposing medieval Baba Vida Fortress as well as the Jules Pascin Cultural Center in the beautifully restored synagogue. In addition, the expansive city garden directly on the river invites you to stroll and combines nature with impressive architecture. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Vidin passenger terminal, which is in the immediate vicinity of the city center. Thanks to this excellent location, travelers can easily reach the historic alleys and most important sights within a few minutes' walk via the green riverside promenade.
Vidin, a historic Danube port in northwestern Bulgaria, is a picturesque port of call for river cruises. The "Vidin Cruise Center" is located directly on the river and, thanks to its central location, allows for convenient exploration of the city on foot.
Airplane
For arrival by plane from the DACH region, two main airports are available: Craiova International Airport (CRA) in Romania is the closest airport at a distance of about 88 km (approx. 1 hour 50 minutes travel time). The larger Sofia Airport (SOF) in Bulgaria offers better connectivity, but is located around 218 km away and requires a transfer time of about 3 hours 53 minutes by car or 5 hours 29 minutes by bus. Given the longer transfer times, especially from Sofia, an overnight stay in Sofia or in Vidin on the day before embarkation is recommended for a relaxed start to your cruise.
Auto
Vidin is accessible via the Bulgarian national road I-1, which is part of the European route E79. The Botevgrad–Vidin expressway is currently being expanded, which will provide a direct connection to the A2 Hemus highway towards Sofia in the future. An e-vignette is required to use the national roads in Bulgaria. Parking options can be found in the city of Vidin; however, specific long-term Park & Cruise offers directly at the river pier are not separately designated.
Bahn
Vidin has a train station that offers direct connections, for example to Sofia Sever, in about 4 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours 55 minutes travel time. From Vidin train station, you can easily reach the river cruise terminal with a short taxi transfer or local transport, as the city and its main attractions are close to each other.
Check-in & Einschiffung
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
