Port information & tips for Umeå
Umeå, the charming "City of Birches," welcomes travelers as the dynamic cultural center of Northern Sweden, located directly on the picturesque banks of the Umeälven. This vibrant university city impresses with its Scandinavian modernity and a harmonious blend of untouched nature and innovative design. Cultural highlights include the impressive Bildmuseet for contemporary art as well as the Västerbottens Museum, which offers fascinating insights into Sami culture. Cruise ships dock at the modern Umeå Hamn in the Holmsund district, located about 20 kilometers from the city center. Thanks to efficient shuttle buses and a direct train connection, visitors can easily reach the center to explore architectural highlights such as the city church or the world's only guitar museum.
Umeå is a charming destination in northern Sweden, whose cruise port is located in the Holmsund district, approximately 18 to 20 kilometers south of the city center. The port is well-connected but cannot be reached from Umeå on foot. It features a main terminal operated by Wasaline, which handles both ferries and cruise ships.
Car
Traveling to the port of Holmsund by car is convenient via the E12 highway, which leads directly to the port. Follow the signs marked "VASA" from the city center to reach the harbor. Paid, unmonitored parking spaces are available directly at the terminal, which you can easily pay for via SMS or mobile apps such as EasyPark or Parkster. The maximum daily fee is 90 SEK.
Train
The central station Umeå Centralstation is a major hub for Norrtåg and SJ trains from various parts of Sweden, including Stockholm via the Botnia Line. From the train station or the nearby bus hub Vasaplan, you can take the Wasaline transfer bus directly to the terminal in Holmsund in about 34 minutes. Online booking of the bus transfer is recommended, as this offers a discount and only card payments are accepted on the bus.
Airplane
Umeå Airport (UME) is located only about 4 to 5 kilometers south of the city center, making it the closest airport for your arrival. From there, you can easily reach the city center (Vasaplan) by taking the airport bus line 80 (Ultra) in about 10 to 15 minutes. Alternatively, taxis are available to take you to the city center in approximately 10 minutes. For onward travel to the cruise port in Holmsund, a taxi or the previously mentioned Wasaline transfer bus from the city center is recommended. Due to the longer journey from the DACH region, staying overnight at a pre-cruise hotel in Umeå before embarkation can ensure a relaxed start to your cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
