Port information & tips for Marstrand
Marstrand is the maritime jewel of the Swedish west coast and is considered Scandinavia's glamorous sailing mecca. The charming, car-free island impresses with its exclusive flair, historic wooden architecture, and a breathtaking archipelago backdrop. Absolute highlights include the imposing Carlsten Festung, which towers majestically over the town, as well as the renowned Strandverket art museum and the idyllic circular hiking trail along the rugged coastline. Cruise ships usually dock at the central Marstrandskajen, from where guests can immerse themselves directly in the vibrant life of the old town. Thanks to this first-class location, the picturesque alleys, boutiques, and excellent seafood restaurants are within easy walking distance, ensuring a perfect stay without long transfer times.
The Swedish archipelago island of Marstrand, a charming cruise port for smaller luxury ships and superyachts, is easily accessible thanks to good connections via the nearby mainland. Since the island of Marstrand itself is car-free, travel by vehicle takes you to the neighboring island of Koön, from where a short passenger ferry opens up the picturesque destination.
Car
From Göteborg, you can reach Koön, the island located just off the port of Marstrand, via the E6 towards Oslo. Take the exit at Kungälv onto Route 168 and follow it for approximately 25 kilometers directly to Marstrand-Koön. Various paid parking spaces are available there near the ferry terminal, with costs increasing the closer you are to the terminal. Please note that during the winter months (October 1 to April 30), many public parking spaces are free of charge. From Koön, a short passenger ferry will take you to Marstrand in just two to three minutes.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Göteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT), located about 70 kilometers from Marstrand/Koön. From there, you can reach the ferry to Marstrand by taxi or private transfer in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Alternatively, airport buses such as Vy flygbussarna take you to Göteborg Central Station, where you can easily transfer to regional bus connections to Marstrand.
Train & Bus
Travelers from the DACH region can reach Göteborg Central Station (Göteborg C) comfortably by train. From there, continuing by bus is a great option: lines 302 and 312 run regularly from the Nils Ericson Terminal directly to the Marstrand färjeläge ferry terminal on Koön. The express bus on line 312 takes about 55 minutes, while line 302 gets you to your destination in approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. A major advantage is that the bus ticket often already includes the crossing on the passenger ferry to Marstrand.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
