Port information & tips for Luleå
Luleå is the pulsating heart of Swedish Lapland, welcoming visitors with a fascinating blend of subarctic charm and a modern Scandinavian lifestyle. Picturesquely situated on a peninsula in the Gulf of Bothnia, the city impresses with its vast archipelago and a lively cultural scene right by the water. Cultural highlights include the UNESCO World Heritage site Gammelstad Church Town with its historic red wooden houses, as well as the impressive Luleå Cathedral and the informative Norrbottens Museum. Larger cruise ships dock at the Uddebo terminal, which is located about eight kilometers from the city center; regular shuttle buses provide a convenient connection to the city center and surrounding sights for a relaxed exploration.
Luleå, a fascinating cruise port in northern Sweden and the gateway to Swedish Lapland, is easy to reach thanks to its good connections. Cruise ships usually dock at Södra Hamn (South Harbor), which is centrally located in the city, or at Svartö-Kai. Please note that Svartö-Kai is not available for cruise ships between May and November in the years 2024-2028, so embarkation during this time takes place primarily in the centrally located Södra Hamn.
Car
The European route E4 passes directly by Luleå and connects the city from the south (Helsingborg) to the Finnish border at Haparanda. This allows for a comfortable arrival with your own vehicle. In Luleå, various parking options for short- and long-term parkers are available, which you can conveniently pay for via app or SMS through providers such as Aimo Park. Directly at Södra Hamn, you will also find a parking lot at Södra Hamnplan. Please observe the signs for designated parking areas in the port area.
Train
Luleå Centralstation is an important hub in the Swedish rail network and offers Intercity connections from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Kiruna, and even Narvik in Norway. The station is very centrally located and is only a few minutes' walk from the city center. From there, you can reach your cruise terminal either comfortably on foot, by local bus lines connecting the city center and the surrounding area, or by taxi, which is available directly in front of the main exit.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Luleå Airport (LLA), also known as Kallax, the largest airport in northern Sweden. It is located only about 7 kilometers southeast of the city center. Luleå Airport offers regular domestic flights, for example from Stockholm, which enables a fast journey from the DACH region with one transfer. Getting from the airport to the city center and port is straightforward: local bus lines (e.g., Bus 4 or 104) take about 14-15 minutes to Smedjegatan/city center, with Bus 104 also serving the bus and main train station. The trip costs around 31 SEK. Alternatively, shuttle services or taxis are available, which will take you to the port in about 10-15 minutes for approximately 250-300 SEK. Due to the often long journey, we recommend planning a pre-cruise hotel stay in Luleå when arriving by plane to start your cruise relaxed.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
