Port information & tips for Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, the pulsating heart of Vietnam, fascinates as a dynamic metropolis full of contrasts between French colonial history and a modern spirit of optimism. The city on the Saigon River delights with its lively flair, bustling markets, and an impressive skyline that harmoniously reflects both tradition and progress. Cultural highlights include the imposing Notre-Dame Cathedral, the historic Central Post Office, and the bustling Bến Thành Market with its authentic specialties. Large cruise ships usually dock at the port of Phu My, which, thanks to an efficient connection, allows for an approximately one-and-a-half-hour drive into the lively center, while smaller ships dock directly at the centrally located Nha Rong Terminal, offering guests immediate access to all the city's major sights.
Ho Chi Minh City is usually accessed during cruises via the modern deep-water port of Phu My or the Hiep Phuoc terminal, which is located closer to the center. Thanks to its excellent connections to the international airport, it is an ideal starting point for travels through Southeast Asia. The terminals are located approximately 60 to 80 kilometers outside the city center and are easily accessible via well-developed highways.
Airplane
Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) serves as the main hub and is regularly served by direct flights from Frankfurt or Zurich. From the airport, you can reach the terminals in Phu My via the CT01 highway in about 90 to 120 minutes, with numerous licensed taxis and private transport services available for a comfortable onward journey directly at the exit.
Transfer & Shuttle
The most convenient way to reach the ship is via organized shuttle buses provided by the cruise lines or through pre-booked private transfers that pick you up at the airport or your hotel. Thanks to the modern Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway and the National Highway 51, the travel time to the port is significantly reduced while offering initial impressions of the Vietnamese landscape.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight duration from the DACH region and the time difference, we recommend arriving at least one to two days before embarkation and staying at a hotel in the central District 1. From this prime location, sights such as Notre-Dame Cathedral or the Opera House can be explored at leisure; additionally, many hotels offer direct limousine service to the port.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
