Port information & tips for Chau Doc
Chau Doc is a fascinating border town in the picturesque Mekong Delta and is considered a cultural gateway between Vietnam and Cambodia. The city impresses with its lively river landscape and a spiritual atmosphere created by a harmonious blend of pagodas, floating markets, and colonial architecture. Among the most significant highlights are the sacred Sam Mountain with the magnificent Ba-Chua-Xu Temple, as well as the colorful Tay-An Pagoda and the impressive floating fish farms on the Bassac River. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Chau Doc Passenger Pier, which is situated directly in the city center, offering travelers direct access to the bustling market alleys and the charming waterfront promenade.
Chau Doc is an important starting point for Mekong river cruises and, thanks to its location in the Mekong Delta, easily accessible, with travel from the DACH region primarily via flight and subsequent transfer. Specific cruise terminals in the Western sense do not exist here; embarkation usually takes place directly at the piers on the river.
Airplane
The nearest major airport is Can Tho Airport (VCA), located about 120 kilometers from Chau Doc. For international travelers, however, Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City is the central gateway, offering direct flights from the DACH region. From there, the travel time to Chau Doc is about 5-6 hours. Alternatively, Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) in Cambodia can be considered for combined trips, which is about 4-5 hours away, as many Mekong cruises cross the border.
Transfer & Shuttle
After arriving in Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Phnom Penh (PNH), transfers to Chau Doc are usually arranged via private minibuses, taxis, or organized shuttle services provided by the cruise lines. These transfers are often included in the river cruise travel package and offer a comfortable and direct ride to the embarkation point. There are also public buses connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Chau Doc, which represents a cost-effective, albeit more time-consuming, alternative.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Europe and the partly extended transfer times from the airport, an overnight stay in Ho Chi Minh City on the day before the cruise is recommended. This allows for a relaxed start and offers the opportunity to explore Vietnam's vibrant metropolis before the river cruise begins. Many hotels in Ho Chi Minh City also offer assistance in organizing transfers to Chau Doc.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
