Port information & tips for Galle

Galle is a fascinating jewel on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, enchanting visitors with a unique blend of colonial history and tropical beauty. The atmosphere is characterized by the majestic fortifications and the relaxed flair of the old town, while the warm sea breeze blows through the charming, cobblestone streets. Absolute highlights include the impressive Galle Fort, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the iconic white lighthouse, and the historic Dutch Reformed Church. Cruise ships dock at Galle International Port, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the city center. Thanks to this excellent location, guests can reach the historic sights and local markets within a few minutes comfortably on foot or with a short tuk-tuk ride.

Galle, a historic port on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, welcomes cruise guests as a tender port, where smaller boats bring passengers comfortably from the ship to the pier. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Galle Fort is easily accessible on foot from there and is ideal for immediate exploration.

Airplane

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo is the main arrival point for travelers from the DACH region and is located approximately 130 to 155 kilometers from Galle. Direct flight connections are available from Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich to Colombo, among others. Given the long travel times from Europe, it is advisable to arrive in Sri Lanka at least one day before embarkation to start your cruise relaxed.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), you can reach Galle comfortably and quickly thanks to the Southern Expressway (E01). The journey time by taxi or a pre-booked transfer is approximately 1 hour 52 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. Numerous providers offer private transfers and shuttles, enabling a direct and comfortable arrival at the port. Alternatively, ride-sharing services such as Uber or PickMe are also available.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

An overnight stay in Colombo or directly in Galle before the start of your cruise is highly recommended due to the long flight time. This allows you to get used to the local climate and make the journey to the port on embarkation day stress-free. In Galle itself, you will find a variety of charming accommodations in or near the Galle Fort, from where the tender pier is easily accessible.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
