Port information & tips for Donsol
Donsol is a pristine natural paradise at the southern tip of the Philippine island of Luzon and is known worldwide as the "whale shark capital". The idyllic coastal community impresses with its authentic atmosphere, lush tropical vegetation, and the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Ragay. Absolute highlights include snorkeling with the gentle giants at the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center, an evening firefly safari on the Donsol River, and excursions to the coral gardens of Ticao Island. Ships usually use the centrally located Donsol Municipal Port in the Dancalan district. Thanks to this prime location, travelers can reach the most important natural spectacles and the lively town center in just a few minutes easily on foot or by local transport.
Donsol in the Philippine province of Sorsogon is not a classic cruise port, but a well-known center for ethical whale shark encounters, making it an ideal starting point for extraordinary expeditions. Travel from the DACH region is primarily by plane, followed by a comfortable land transfer to the Whale Shark Interaction Center in Barangay Dancalan, the central meeting point.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Bicol International Airport (DRP) near Legazpi (formerly Legazpi Airport, LGP), which is located approximately 45 to 60 kilometers from Donsol. After long-haul flights to Manila (MNL), you can reach Legazpi with a domestic flight of about 50 minutes. Several airlines offer daily connections, allowing for flexible travel planning.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Bicol International Airport (DRP) in Legazpi, the transfer to Donsol takes approximately 46 minutes to 1.5 hours. You can take either a taxi or a private van directly at the airport; the cost for a private van is between ₱1,500 and ₱2,500. Alternatively, cheaper shared vans or shuttles are available, which often require a short tricycle ride to the bus station in Legazpi. Many hotels in Donsol also organize airport transfers for their guests.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Europe, an overnight stay in Donsol before the start of your cruise or whale shark tour is highly recommended. Numerous resorts and homestays are located in Dancalan, just a few minutes' walk from the Whale Shark Interaction Center, allowing for a relaxed acclimatization. Many of these accommodations offer free parking for your vehicle if you arrive with a rental car.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
