Port information & tips for Apo Reef
Apo Reef is a spectacular natural jewel of the Philippines and is considered the second largest contiguous coral reef system in the world. Located in the middle of the glittering Mindoro Strait, this protected natural park impresses with its untouched maritime wilderness and breathtaking biodiversity beneath the water's surface. Visitors can explore the historic Apo Reef Lighthouse, discover the fascinating underwater world at Shark Ridge, and enjoy the white sandy beaches of Apo Island. Cruise ships anchor in the protected roadstead of Apo Reef Natural Park, from where guests can take a tender boat directly to the landing stages on the island. As the reef is isolated, the mainland center of Sablayan is about 30 kilometers away, perfectly rounding off the exclusive character of this remote natural paradise.
Apo Reef in the Philippines is not a classic cruise port, but rather a breathtaking National Marine Park and the second largest contiguous coral reef in the world. For cruise passengers from the DACH region, arrival is typically by plane to Philippine hubs and then to local departure points for diving or snorkeling safaris, as the reef can only be reached by boat.
Airplane (International & National)
For travelers from the DACH region, the journey usually begins with an international flight to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila or Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) in Cebu. From Manila, there are daily domestic flights to San Jose Airport (SJI) in Occidental Mindoro, which is reached in about 45 minutes and is the nearest airport for the Sablayan region. Alternatively, liveaboard cruises to Apo Reef can also start from Coron on Palawan, which is accessible via Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) (also known as Busuanga Airport) with direct flights from Manila and Cebu.
Transfer to the Departure Port
From San Jose Airport (SJI), you can take a tricycle to the bus station and continue by bus or van to Sablayan, the main starting point for tours to Apo Reef. This journey takes about 2 to 3 hours. In Sablayan, the tourism office or private providers organize boat trips to the reef, which take around 3 hours depending on sea conditions. If you have booked a liveaboard tour from Coron, the transfer from Busuanga Airport (USU) to the port of Coron ensures a comfortable start to your journey.
Note: Liveaboards & Pre-Cruise Stay
Apo Reef is located about 30 to 40 kilometers off the coast and is best explored on a multi-day liveaboard safari, which significantly simplifies the travel experience and often includes other dive sites such as the wrecks of Coron. Since Apo Reef itself offers no resorts, only a ranger station and a campsite, a pre-cruise overnight stay in Manila, Cebu, or a hotel in Sablayan, such as on nearby Pandan Island, or in Coron is recommended after the long-haul flight to start your diving adventure relaxed.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
