Port information & tips for Port Moresby

Port Moresby, the fascinating capital of Papua New Guinea, welcomes travelers as the cultural gateway to one of the most pristine paradises on earth. The city impresses with its location on the deep blue Gulf of Papua and offers an exciting mix of modern architecture and vibrant Melanesian tradition. Visitors can explore the Port Moresby Nature Park with its exotic flora, admire the cultural treasures in the National Museum and Art Gallery, and at the same time enjoy the colorful hustle and bustle at the modern Harbourside Precinct. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Main Wharf, which is situated directly at the edge of the business center and, thanks to short distances, provides convenient access to the most important sights as well as the lively markets of the metropolis.

Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea serves cruise guests from the DACH region almost exclusively as a port of call within the framework of South Seas or Oceania cruises, as the infrastructure is not designed for large embarkation and disembarkation operations. Arrival usually requires long-haul flights. Passengers mostly dock at the commercial wharf in Fairfax Harbour, where organized transfers are typically used for onward travel from the industrially oriented port area.

Airplane

The nearest and most relevant airport is Jacksons International Airport (POM), located about 8 to 12 kilometers east of Port Moresby city center, and it is the largest and busiest airport in the country. Direct long-haul flights from the DACH region are not available; connections via major hubs such as Singapore or Australia (e.g., Sydney or Brisbane) are common. Given the long flight duration and the time difference, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended to start the cruise relaxed.

Transfer & Shuttle

Various transfer options exist from Jacksons International Airport (POM) to the port or to hotels in Port Moresby. There are no public buses directly from the airport to the city center or port. A convenient and safe option is to use a pre-booked private transfer, which ensures a relaxed journey to your destination and avoids waiting times. Many hotels in Port Moresby also offer their own shuttle services, which also represent a reliable transport option. Taxis are available at the airport, but it is recommended to use only clearly marked vehicles and to agree on the fare in advance, as there is no regulated taxi rank with meters.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

For a stress-free arrival and to acclimatize after the long-haul flight, an overnight stay in one of the hotels in Port Moresby is highly recommended. Popular options near the airport or with good connections to the city and the port include the Airways Hotel, the Hilton Port Moresby Hotel & Residences, or The Stanley Hotel & Suites, many of which offer free airport transfers. This allows travelers to recover before embarkation and prepare for exploring the region. The tourist infrastructure outside of major hotels is limited, and independent exploration on foot is generally not advisable due to safety concerns. Cruise lines and local authorities strongly recommend using organized shore excursions or pre-booked, verified means of transport.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
