The Louisiade Archipelago is a pristine natural paradise in the far southeast of Papua New Guinea and is considered one of the most fascinating expedition destinations in the South Pacific. The region impresses with a spectacular island world where crystal-clear, turquoise water meets palm-fringed white sand beaches and a vibrant indigenous culture. Absolute highlights include the colorful coral reefs of the Conflict Islands, the Turtle Nursery for the protection of endangered sea turtles, and the exploration of the lush flora on Panasesa Island. Since there are no industrial terminals, ships anchor in the protected atoll of the Conflict Islands. Guests reach the pier on Panasesa Island directly by tender boat, from where the paradisiacal beaches and nature trails are immediately and comfortably accessible thanks to the short distances.

The Louisiade Archipelago in Papua New Guinea is a truly exotic destination, primarily reached via expedition cruises. Direct travel to the archipelago itself is uncommon; instead, cruises typically depart from Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. The islands of the archipelago are then accessed by ship, with embarkation at the smaller, natural anchorages often conducted by tender boat.
Airplane
Your journey from the DACH region is primarily by plane to Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea's main international airport. As there are generally no direct flights from Europe, connecting flights via hubs such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila, Brisbane, or Sydney are necessary. Plan for a long flight time and appropriate layovers for the entire journey to ensure a relaxed arrival in Port Moresby.
Transfer & Onward Travel
From Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby, the distance to the city center and cruise docks, such as Fairfax Harbour or Motukea Wharf, is approximately 8 to 15 kilometers. The journey takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Since there is no public transport such as trains or buses from the airport in Port Moresby, we recommend using hotel shuttles or pre-booked private transfers organized by the cruise lines or reputable local providers. This ensures a safe and comfortable onward journey to your departure port.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Expedition Notes
Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the time difference, staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel in Port Moresby before embarkation is highly recommended. Renowned hotels such as the Airways Hotel or the Hilton Port Moresby Hotel & Residences offer comfortable accommodations and often provide a free airport transfer. Trips to the Louisiade Archipelago are mostly expedition cruises, where you usually do not dock at a fixed terminal but instead explore the islands by tender boat. This allows for an intensive nature experience in this remote and largely untouched island world.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
