Port information & tips for Kaileuna (Trobriand Islands)
Kaileuna is an untouched jewel of the legendary Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea and whisks travelers away to a world of ancestral traditions. The island captivates with its authentic flair, characterized by turquoise waters, dense palm groves, and a fascinating matrilineal culture. Highlights include the elaborately decorated yam houses, the impressive dances of the locals, and the masterly wood carvings in the settlement of Kaduwaga. Thanks to the intact coral reefs, snorkeling in the crystal-clear water is also a unique experience. Since there is no large port, cruise ships anchor off the coast and guests reach the Kaduwaga landing site conveniently by tender boat, from where the village center and the dreamlike beaches are directly accessible on foot.

Traveling to the Trobriand Islands, including Kaileuna, is a true expedition from the DACH region, as this remote part of Papua New Guinea primarily serves as a port of call for smaller cruise ships rather than an embarkation port. Expect a journey that requires planning and flexibility to experience the untouched beauty of this island world.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region typically involves long-haul flights to Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. Direct flights are not available, so you should generally plan for one or two stopovers, for example in Asia or Australia. Airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Qantas, or Cathay Pacific offer suitable connections.
Onward Travel to the Trobriand Islands
From Port Moresby, onward travel to the Trobriand Islands, especially to the main island of Kiriwina, which has Losuia Airport (LSA), is associated with further challenges. Currently (as of April 2024), Losuia Airport is closed for commercial domestic flights. An alternative route leads via domestic flight from Jacksons International Airport (POM) to Gurney Airport (GUR) in Alotau. From Alotau, you can then take an overnight passenger ship to the Trobriand Islands, with the ships following the schedules for goods deliveries. The entire journey from Port Moresby to the Trobriand Islands can take about 5 hours or longer in this way.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Local Logistics
Due to the long journey and potentially irregular flight or ferry connections, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Port Moresby after your international flight is strongly recommended. Hotels such as the Airways Hotel or the Hilton Port Moresby offer comfortable accommodations near the airport. On the Trobriand Islands themselves, the infrastructure is extremely limited; there are no paved roads, public transport, or ATMs. Cruise ships anchor off the coast, and guests are brought ashore by tender boats, often to simple beach sections. Plan to bring enough cash in Papua New Guinea Kina (PGK) for your explorations.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: When going ashore, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
