Port information & tips for Tioman Island
The paradise island of Tioman in the South China Sea is considered one of Malaysia's most beautiful natural jewels and enchants visitors with its untouched wilderness. The island impresses with dense tropical rainforest, striking granite peaks, and crystal-clear water that invites you to dream while exuding a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the species-rich Tioman Marine Park Centre with its colorful coral reefs and the charming village of Tekek, which delights with its duty-free shopping opportunities and idyllic coastal sections. Cruise ships use the central Tekek Village Pier (Kampung Tekek) as a docking point, which is located directly in the island's main town and provides immediate access to local restaurants, shops, and picturesque hiking trails.
Tioman Island is an enchanting island off the east coast of Malaysia, typically reached from the DACH region by plane followed by a ferry crossing. There are currently no direct commercial flight connections to the island, so the journey always requires a combination of land and sea routes.
Airplane & Transfer
For travel from the DACH region, guests first fly to major international airports on the Malaysian mainland or to Singapore. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is a main hub; from there, the onward journey to the Mersing or Tanjung Gemok ferry terminals takes about 4 to 5 hours by bus or taxi (approx. 400 km driving distance). Senai International Airport (JHB) near Johor Bahru is significantly closer to Mersing at around 90 kilometers and allows for transfers to the Mersing Jetty in about 2.5 to 3 hours by taxi or private shuttle. Another option is Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), from which buses to Mersing take about 3.5 hours, though additional time should be allowed for the border crossing.
Ferry
The crucial stage to Tioman Island takes place by ferry from one of the two main piers on the mainland: Mersing Jetty in Johor or Tanjung Gemok Jetty (also known as Teluk Gading) in Pahang. The Mersing Jetty is the more well-known departure point, but its ferry times are heavily dependent on the tides. The crossing to Tioman takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, depending on weather conditions and the number of stops. The Tanjung Gemok Jetty, located about 35 km north of Mersing, tends to offer more stable and less tide-dependent ferry times. Ferry companies such as Bluewater Express and Cataferry serve the routes, with Cataferry being known for its more comfortable vessels. Booking tickets online in advance is recommended, and a waiting time of 90 to 120 minutes before departure should be planned at the terminal. A marine conservation fee of 30 RM for foreigners is payable at the jetty.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the long journey to the ferry terminals and the variable ferry schedules, particularly from the Mersing Jetty, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel on the mainland is recommended. In Mersing, you will find various accommodations such as the Hotel Riverside or the Hotel Seri Malaysia Mersing, which allow for a relaxed start to your holiday and sometimes offer parking and shuttles to the jetty. There are also hotels near the Tanjung Gemok Jetty, such as the Hotel Jeti Tg Gemok or the Hotel Seri Malaysia Rompin, which provide a convenient base for the morning ferry crossing. This ensures your cruise experience to Tioman Island begins pleasantly and stress-free.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination area – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
