In addition, cruise ships dock at the modern Takasago-Pier (Takasago Wharf), which is located about six kilometers from the city center and offers a convenient connection to all central attractions and the train station thanks to provided shuttle buses.
The cruise port of Sakata in Japan, located in the Yamagata Prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan, is usually accessible for guests from the DACH region as part of a Fly & Cruise package. The Sakata North Port Cruise Terminal is situated in an industrial area about 6 to 7 kilometers from the city center and is not within walking distance.
Airplane
For travel from the DACH region, an international flight to a major Japanese hub such as Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) is recommended, followed by a convenient domestic flight to the nearest Shonai Airport (SYO). This regional airport is about 14 to 15 kilometers away from the port and offers the fastest option for onward travel. Due to the long flight time, it is advisable to arrive in Japan at least one day before embarkation to start your cruise relaxed.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Shonai Airport (SYO), you can easily reach the center of Sakata by limousine bus, for example to Sakata Station or the Sankyo Soko rice storehouses. The journey takes about 29 to 40 minutes and costs between ¥770 and ¥930. Alternatively, a taxi is available, covering the distance in about 13 to 25 minutes for approximately ¥4,900 to ¥8,500. From Sakata Station, the relevant transport hub, the port can be reached by taxi in around 10 to 20 minutes. Cruise lines or the local port authority frequently offer shuttle services from the city center to the cruise terminal, often for a small fee of around ¥1,000 for a round trip.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Local Connections
An overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in the center of Sakata, for example near Sakata Station, is highly recommended after the long-haul flight from Europe. There you will find hotels with good connections to local transport and facilities. The Sakata Port Cruise Terminal has a large parking lot with capacity for more than 200 private vehicles, in case you plan to arrive by rental car. The connection to the highway is via the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway (E7) and National Routes 7 and 47, which provide direct access to the port.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed check-in time slot with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
