Port information & tips for Sado Island

Flight & Transfer to Niigata
For guests from the DACH region, we recommend a flight to Japan to one of the major international airports such as Tokyo-Narita (NRT) or Tokyo-Haneda (HND), from where there are good connecting flights to Niigata Airport (KIJ). Niigata Airport (KIJ) is the nearest airport and offers quick transfer options to the ferry port. With the Sado Kisen Liner (mini liner), you can reach the Sado Kisen ferry terminal in Niigata directly in about 25 minutes; the cost is approximately 700 Yen.
Train & Car to the Niigata Ferry Port
Travelers from the DACH region can easily reach Niigata Station directly from Tokyo Main Station with the JR Joetsu Shinkansen, which takes about two hours and can be covered by the Japan Rail Pass. From Niigata Station, you can reach the Sado Kisen ferry terminal in Niigata in about 15 minutes by bus for 260 Yen or in about 10 minutes by taxi for around 1,000 to 1,500 Yen. Those arriving by car should use the Hokuriku, Kan-etsu, or Ban-etsu Expressways to the Niigata-Kameda I.C., from where the Niigata ferry port can be reached in about 30 minutes. At the Niigata ferry terminal, a paid multi-story parking garage is available, offering ferry passengers a discounted daily rate of 800 Yen per 24 hours.
Ferry to Sado Island & Pre-Cruise Hotel
The crucial crossing to Sado Island is made with the ferries of the Sado Kisen shipping company from Niigata to Ryotsu Port on Sado. You can choose between the fast jetfoil, which takes you to the island in about one hour and costs around 7,000 Yen per person, or the more spacious car ferry, which takes approximately 2.5 hours and costs about 2,900 Yen per person. The car ferry runs about every three hours, while the jetfoil departs every one to two hours depending on the season. Given the long journey from the DACH region and the ferry crossing, an overnight stay at a pre-cruise hotel in Niigata City is highly recommended to start your cruise adventure relaxed. Ryotsu Port on Sado Island is well-equipped with shops, restaurants, and car rental counters, which you can find directly at the terminal.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
