The Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan are a fascinating UNESCO Global Geopark destination that welcomes travelers with untouched nature and deeply rooted Japanese mythology. This volcanic archipelago impresses with its dramatic backdrop of steep coastal formations, dense forests, and an extraordinary tranquility that creates a mystical atmosphere. Cultural and natural highlights include the historic Tamawakasu-mikoto Shrine with its 2,000-year-old Yao-sugi cedar, as well as the impressive Dangyo-no-taki waterfalls. Cruise ships usually dock at the centrally located port of Saigo on the main island of Dogo. This pier is situated directly in the heart of the charming town of Saigo, meaning local culture, authentic restaurants, and sights are easily accessible within a few minutes' walk.
The Oki Islands, a UNESCO Global Geopark in the Sea of Japan, are a unique destination that requires careful travel planning. The main port for cruise ships and ferries is Saigo Port on Dogo Island, the largest island in the archipelago, which is also the only docking point for ocean-going vessels on Dogo.
Airplane (International Arrival)
For guests from the DACH region, travel to the Oki Islands always involves a long-haul flight to Japan, for example to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) or Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX). Due to the long flight duration and the required domestic connections, an overnight stay on the Japanese mainland is recommended to start your holiday relaxed.
Domestic Flight & Onward Travel to the Islands
Oki Global Geopark Airport (OKI) on Dogo Island is the only airport in the Oki Islands and is connected by domestic flights from Osaka Itami Airport (ITM) and Izumo Airport (IZO). After arriving at Oki Airport, you can easily reach Saigo Port by shuttle bus, which is about a 10 to 20-minute drive away. A bus ticket costs 520 JPY per adult. Alternatively, taxis are available, although pre-reservation is advisable, especially on weekends and during high season.
Ferry from the Japanese Mainland
Another travel option is the ferry connection from the Japanese mainland. Ferries depart from the ports of Shichirui (Shimane Prefecture) and Sakaiminato (Tottori Prefecture) and call at Saigo Port on Dogo Island, among others. Sakaiminato Port is located directly at Sakaiminato Station, allowing for a comfortable connection by train. Shichirui Port can be reached easily by bus from Matsue Station (travel time approximately 40 minutes). The crossing takes between 2.5 and 4 hours depending on the ferry type and destination island; early booking is recommended for faster hydrofoil connections or for taking a vehicle. Parking facilities are also available at Saigo Port itself.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the shipping company and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
