Port information & tips for Hakodate
Hakodate, at the southern tip of Hokkaido, is a fascinating destination that charmingly combines Japanese tradition with international influences. The port city captivates with its picturesque location at the foot of Mount Hakodate and offers an inviting atmosphere with historical villas and lively markets. Absolute highlights include the star-shaped Fort Goryokaku, the atmospheric Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses directly on the waterfront, and the famous Asaichi morning market. Cruise ships usually dock at Minatomachi Wharf, which is located about five kilometers from the city center and allows convenient access to all sights thanks to efficient shuttle connections and taxis.
The port of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido impresses with its blend of historic flair and modern connectivity. Depending on the ship's size, travelers use either the centrally located Wakamatsu Pier with its terminal opened in 2022, or the Minato-cho Terminal designed for large ocean liners.
Airplane
Hakodate Airport (HKD) is located just nine kilometers east of the city center and is directly connected via the international hubs of Tokyo-Haneda (HND) or Sapporo (CTS). From the airport, you can comfortably reach the main train station in about 20 minutes with the Teisan Shuttle Bus or use a taxi for a direct transfer to your respective cruise terminal.
Train
Thanks to the connection to the Hokkaido Shinkansen high-speed network, you can reach Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station from Tokyo in about four hours. From there, the Hakodate Liner takes you directly to JR Hakodate Station in another 20 minutes, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Wakamatsu Pier and serves as a central hub for shuttle buses to the more distant Minato-cho Terminal.
Transfer & Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the time difference, an overnight stay in Hakodate before embarkation is recommended. Hotels near JR Hakodate Station offer the advantage of short distances to the famous Morning Market and the cruise line shuttle meeting points, while traveling to the terminals via National Route 5 also guarantees easy accessibility by taxi or private transfer services.

Please note that you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
