Port information & tips for Goto Islands

The Goto Islands off the coast of Kyushu are a hidden gem of Japan, delighting visitors with their untouched nature and fascinating history. The region impresses with its azure waters, lush green hills, and the spiritual atmosphere of its historical churches, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. In the immediate vicinity of the port, the remains of Ishida Castle with its picturesque garden and the authentic samurai district Bukeyashiki-dori invite you on a journey through time, while the nearby Mount Onidake offers a spectacular panorama over the archipelago. Cruise ships dock at the central Fukue Port Cruise Terminal, which, thanks to its location directly in Fukue City, allows for short distances while serving as an ideal starting point for all island explorations.

The Goto Islands in Japan are a fascinating destination, primarily reached by plane or ferry from the Japanese mainland before heading to the local cruise port, usually the Port of Fukue on Fukue Island. Arriving a day early is generally recommended due to travel times and connections.

Airplane

For guests from the DACH region, travel to the Goto Islands primarily involves a long-haul flight to Japan, for example to Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) International Airport, or to Fukuoka (FUK) or Nagasaki (NGS) on Kyushu. From there, domestic flights are available to Fukue Airport (FUJ) on Fukue Island. Fukue Airport is located only a few kilometers from Fukue Port, and taxis or local buses offer convenient transfer options.

Ferry

A charming alternative for traveling to the Goto Islands is the ferry connection from the Japanese mainland. Regular ferry services operate from Nagasaki and Fukuoka, among others, to Fukue Port. The crossing from Nagasaki to Fukue takes about 3.5 hours by high-speed ferry or around 4 hours by car ferry, while the route from Fukuoka can take up to 8 hours. The ferry terminal in Fukue is centrally located and well-connected.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the need to transfer to the Goto Islands, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel is strongly recommended. This can be done in one of the larger Japanese cities such as Tokyo, Fukuoka, or Nagasaki to ensure a relaxed connecting flight or ferry crossing. Alternatively, a hotel on the main island of Fukue is an option, particularly near Fukue Port, to be well-rested and on time at the terminal on embarkation day.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
