Yenwaupnor on the island of Gam is a hidden gem in the heart of Raja Ampat, whisking travelers away to one of Indonesia's most biodiverse natural paradises. The idyllic location amidst turquoise waters and dense rainforests promises an authentic encounter with the untouched wilderness of West Papua and the warm culture of the locals. Yenwaupnor on Gam Island in Raja Ampat is a remote paradise that does not have a traditional cruise port with extensive infrastructure; instead, it is visited by expedition cruises and dive boats. Access is via Sorong as the main hub, followed by transfers by ferry or speedboat and finally zodiacs or local boats directly to the island.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region is primarily by plane to Sorong, the gateway to the Raja Ampat archipelago. The nearest airport is Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) in Sorong, West Papua. This is served by direct flights from major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta (CGK), Makassar (UPG), and Denpasar (DPS) on Bali. A flight from Jakarta to Sorong, for example, takes about 3 hours and 55 minutes. Due to the long international journey, an overnight stay in one of the Indonesian metropolises and an additional overnight stay in Sorong before traveling on to Raja Ampat is recommended.
Transfer & Ferry
From Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) in Sorong, you can easily reach the port of Sorong by taxi or ride-hailing services in about 10 to 15 minutes, with costs amounting to around 3 euros. Express ferries depart twice daily from the port of Sorong to Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat on Waigeo Island, with departure times at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and a travel time of about two hours. Alternatively, public speedboat services are available. From Waisai or directly from Sorong, you then proceed by speedboat to Yenwaupnor on Gam Island, as landing directly from the cruise ships is done with zodiacs or local boats.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the multi-stage and time-consuming journey to remote Yenwaupnor, an overnight stay on-site is highly recommended. In Sorong, you will find comfortable hotels such as the Swiss-Belhotel Sorong or the Royal Mamberamo Hotel, many of which offer a free airport transfer. There are also accommodation options in Waisai, such as the Waigeo Villa or the Waiwo Dive Resort, to start your Raja Ampat adventure relaxed.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
