Port information & tips for Pulau Rouw

Pulau Rouw is a pristine natural jewel in the heart of Cendrawasih Bay off the coast of West Papua, enchanting visitors with its secluded splendor. This small island captivates with a paradisiacal atmosphere of brilliant white powder-sand beaches, dense tropical greenery, and crystal-clear water shimmering in all shades of turquoise. Absolute highlights include the spectacular coral gardens of the Teluk Cenderawasih National Park, which invite extensive snorkeling trips, as well as the observation of rare bird species in the forests. Furthermore, the fine-sandy beach beckons for relaxed hours, while the vibrant underwater world right off the coast fascinates at the same time. Expedition ships anchor directly off the coast, with landings made by Zodiac on the untouched natural beach, providing direct and comfortable access to the wild nature far from urban centers.

Pulau Rouw, a remote island in the vast Cenderawasih Bay in the Indonesian province of Papua, is an exclusive destination for expedition and diving cruises. Since the island has no traditional port facilities, access is exclusively via Zodiacs or tender boats from the cruise ship, often involving "wet landings" directly onto beaches or small jetties. For travelers from the DACH region, careful planning of the journey is essential.

Airplane

The journey to Pulau Rouw usually begins with long-haul flights from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland to one of Indonesia's major international hubs, such as Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta or Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) on Bali. From there, domestic flights operate to Rendani Airport (MKW) in Manokwari, West Papua, which serves as the most important starting point for expeditions into Cenderawasih Bay. Direct flight connections from Jakarta or Bali to Sorong (SOQ) are also available, with a flight time of approximately 3 to 4 hours. It is recommended to choose direct flights to optimize travel time.

Transfer & Shuttle

Upon arrival at Manokwari Airport (MKW), most expedition cruise lines and liveaboard providers organize a direct transfer from the airport to the ship's embarkation point or to the Aurora expedition yacht. These transfers are often already included in the travel price and ensure a comfortable transition from the flight to the ship. As Pulau Rouw itself offers no public infrastructure, local transfer services or shuttles are not available on the island; all logistics are handled by the cruise line.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long international flights and further domestic connections to West Papua, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Jakarta, Bali, or Manokwari is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed arrival and acclimatization before embarkation. Many hotels in larger cities also offer Park & Cruise packages or transfers to the respective departure points if the ship does not depart directly from Manokwari. Arriving early the day before also minimizes the risk of missed connections due to unforeseen flight delays.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
