Dili is the fascinating capital of Timor-Leste and a rising gem in Southeast Asia, impressing visitors with its untouched nature and profound history. The city welcomes guests with a relaxed coastal atmosphere at the foot of green mountains, while offering cultural insights into a young and proud nation. Outstanding sights include the monumental Cristo Rei statue with its panoramic views over the coast, as well as the moving Archive & Museum of East Timorese Resistance. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Porto de Díli, from where the lively waterfront promenade and the bustling city center are easily reached in just a few minutes on foot or by a short transfer thanks to the excellent location.
The port of Dili, East Timor's vibrant capital, is an exotic destination and primary port of call for cruise ships. As the infrastructure is less designed for mass tourism, a well-planned arrival, ideally with a pre-stay, is recommended for travelers from the DACH region.
Airplane
Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL) is the nearest and only international airport in Dili, located in the city's western suburbs. The distance to the port and city center is only about 5 to 8 kilometers. Direct flights to Dili are available from Darwin (Australia) and Denpasar (Indonesia), among others, which often requires a layover.
Local Transfer
From Dili Airport, you can easily reach the port or your hotel by taxi. The journey takes about 10 to 15 minutes, with a flat rate of approximately 10-15 US dollars being common. Alternatively, mikrolets, local minibuses, offer a very cheap, albeit less comfortable option, which you can board on the main road near the airport.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay in Dili before embarkation is highly recommended to start your cruise relaxed and adjust to the local time. The city offers various hotels such as the Palm Springs Hotel Dili or Hotel Timor, which are ideal for a stay before the cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
Even during the voyage, the following applies: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
