Port information & tips for Lomé
Lomé is the fascinating capital of Togo and is considered one of the most charming destinations on the West African coast. The city delights visitors with its mix of wide boulevards, a relaxed atmosphere on the Gulf of Guinea, and a vibrant culture. Among the most significant sights are the colorful Grand Marché, the imposing Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur, and the mystical Akodessewa Fetish Market, which is considered the largest voodoo market in the world. Cruise ships dock at the Port Autonome de Lomé, which is regarded as one of the most modern deep-water ports in the region. From here, the city center, just about five kilometers away, is quickly and easily accessible by shuttle or taxi, allowing travelers to dive directly into the authentic life of West Africa.
Lomé is a fascinating port of call in West Africa that welcomes guests with its vibrant culture. The port serves cruise ships primarily as a day port of call and is not a typical embarkation or disembarkation port for guests from the DACH region. Arrival at the terminal in Lomé therefore usually takes place to participate in shore excursions or to supplement an existing cruise itinerary. The infrastructure is primarily designed for freight traffic but offers good connectivity.
Airplane
The most comfortable way to arrive from the DACH region is via Lomé–Tokoin International Airport (LFW), officially known as Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport. This is located only about 5 to 6 kilometers from the city center and the port. Direct flight connections from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland are rare; instead, most journeys involve a transfer via European hubs such as Paris (Air France) or other African capitals. Given the long travel times, relaxed travel planning with a sufficient time buffer is recommended.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Lomé Airport (LFW), you can easily reach the port area or your hotel by taxi or with a pre-booked private transfer. A taxi ride to the city center or the port takes only about 6 minutes and costs between 1 and 3 US dollars. Private transfer services offer the advantage of a professional driver who will meet you in the arrival hall with a name sign and take you to your destination on time.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the international long-haul flights and the time difference, an overnight stay in one of the city's hotels is recommended for a relaxed arrival in Lomé. This allows for stress-free acclimatization before your shore excursions or meeting your ship. In the city center of Lomé, you will find a selection of hotels that provide a good base for exploring Togo's lively capital.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
