KuGompo, formerly known as East London, is a charming gateway to South Africa's Sunshine Coast and impresses with its location at the mouth of the Buffalo River. Visitors can explore fascinating sights such as the renowned East London Museum with the world-famous coelacanth, the picturesque aquarium, and the extensive Nahoon Beach. Cruise ships dock at the Princess Elizabeth Quay directly in the port of KuGompo, with the vibrant city center located only about two kilometers away and easily accessible in just a few minutes thanks to short shuttle connections.
The port of KuGompo, better known as East London, is South Africa's only river port and is sheltered at the mouth of the Buffalo River. Cruise ships dock directly in the commercial port, from where passengers usually reach the city entrance via shuttles or taxis. The city is mainly accessible by plane for DACH guests.
Airplane
The nearest airport is King Phalo Airport (ELS), formerly East London Airport, located about 6 to 9 kilometers west of the city center. It serves as an important transportation hub for domestic flights connecting East London with major South African cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. International guests from the DACH region reach South Africa via the major international airports and then fly on to ELS. Given the long journey from the DACH region, an arrival the evening before is strongly recommended.
Transfer & Shuttle
From King Phalo Airport (ELS), you can reach the city center and the port comfortably in about 15 to 25 minutes driving time. Taxis are available directly at the terminal, although it is advisable to agree on the fare in advance or insist on using the meter. In addition, many hotels offer their own shuttle services, and private transfer services are also a comfortable option.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
For a relaxed start to your cruise from East London, especially after a long-haul flight from the DACH region, an overnight stay in one of the hotels in East London is recommended. This allows for a stress-free arrival and gives you the opportunity to get to know the city and its surroundings, such as the picturesque beaches or Latimer's Landing on the Buffalo River with its restaurants, before you begin your sea voyage. Most cruise ships dock in the industrial port, so a hotel stay before embarkation offers additional comfort.
