Tokeh on the west coast of Sierra Leone is an exclusive West African gem and is considered one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline on the continent. The region impresses with its pristine white sandy beach, which blends gently into the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic and is impressively framed by forested mountains. Visitors enjoy the paradisiacal peace and quiet at Tokeh Beach, explore the picturesque River No. 2 Beach, or undertake exciting excursions to the nearby Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Cruise ships usually anchor in the sheltered bay, with disembarkation by tender boat directly at the Tokeh Sands jetty. From this idyllic location, the lively capital of Freetown is around 30 kilometers away and easily accessible thanks to the well-developed coastal road.

Tokeh, an idyllic coastal village in Sierra Leone, is a popular destination for expedition and luxury cruises. However, it serves exclusively as a port of call, not as an embarkation port. Cruise ships anchor off the coast, and guests reach the beach via tender boats. For travelers from the DACH region, arrival in the region primarily occurs via the international airport in Freetown, followed by onward travel to Tokeh.
Airplane
The nearest international airport is Freetown International Airport (FNA), also known as Lungi Airport. There are no direct flights from the DACH region; however, airlines such as Air France, Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Turkish Airlines, and Kenya Airlines offer connections with layovers. Due to the long journey and the complex onward travel to the port area, it is recommended to arrive at least one day before the planned embarkation or visit to Tokeh.
Transfer to the Port Area
The journey from Freetown International Airport (FNA) to Tokeh involves several steps. The airport is located on a peninsula across from Freetown. The easiest and fastest connection to Freetown itself is a water taxi, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes and costs around 45 US Dollars, including transfer to the ferry terminal. From Freetown, it is another 30 to 38 kilometers on the Western Area Peninsula Road to Tokeh. A private taxi ride or a rental car is the most convenient option and takes between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on traffic. The road to Tokeh, often referred to as the Peninsula Highway, can be unpaved in sections and deteriorate, especially during the rainy season (May to October).
Pre-Cruise Stay in Freetown
Given the travel time from the airport and the specifics of the transfer to Tokeh, a pre-cruise stay in Freetown is recommended. Various hotels are available there, providing a comfortable start to your Sierra Leone experience. In Tokeh itself, there are also resorts like "The Place Resort" and "Tokeh Sands" that offer a relaxed atmosphere right on the beach. A pre-cruise stay also offers the opportunity to explore the fascinating capital of Freetown before your cruise ship drops anchor off the picturesque coast of Tokeh.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
