Port information & tips for Nacala
Nacala in northern Mozambique is a fascinating hidden gem and impresses as East Africa's deepest natural harbor with an incomparable, untouched coastal landscape. The region captivates with its authentic flair, deep blue water, and a harmonious combination of colonial history and vibrant African culture. Absolute highlights include the dreamlike sandy beaches of Praia de Fernão Veloso as well as excursions to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage site of Ilha de Moçambique with its magnificent architecture and historical fortress. Cruise ships dock directly at the modern deep-water port of Porto de Nacala, which, thanks to its central location, offers convenient access to the city center while also serving as the ideal starting point for discoveries along the picturesque coast and the cultural treasures of the region.
Nacala, as one of Africa's deepest natural harbors, is a unique destination in Mozambique that is accessible to cruise guests from the DACH region primarily by plane in combination with local transfers. Thanks to its good connections and infrastructure, the port area is easily accessible for embarkation.
Airplane
Nacala International Airport (MNC) is located only about 9 kilometers from the port and is the closest air hub for your arrival. For travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, we recommend a flight via major African hubs such as Johannesburg (JNB), from where Airlink offers direct connections to Nacala, or via Maputo (MPM) with LAM Mozambique Airlines. The taxi ride from Nacala Airport to the port takes only about 13 minutes.
Transfer & Shuttle
After arriving at Nacala Airport (MNC), taxis are available for a comfortable transfer to the cruise terminal, with a journey to the port taking about 13 minutes. At the same time, many local hotels offer shuttle services that allow for a relaxed onward journey to the ship. Thanks to the short distance between the airport and the port, the journey to the terminal is efficiently designed.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region, we recommend staying overnight in Nacala the day before your embarkation for a relaxed start to your cruise. Various hotels such as the Hotel Pacific, the Nacala Plaza Business Design Hotel, or the Indico Executivo Hotel are located near the port, offering comfort and sometimes even airport shuttles. A pre-cruise hotel also gives you the opportunity to enjoy the unique atmosphere of this Mozambican port city before departure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually around one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
