For guests from the DACH region, travel is usually organized by plane, with the long journey time making an early arrival and, if necessary, a pre-cruise overnight stay recommended. The dedicated cruise terminal in Maputo is conveniently located near the city center.
Airplane
The nearest international airport is Maputo International Airport (MPM), located about 28 kilometers from the city center. Direct flight connections from the DACH region are rare; most travelers reach Maputo via major hubs such as Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International Airport), which serves as the primary regional transfer airport. Plan sufficient time for the long-haul journey to start your cruise adventure relaxed.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Maputo International Airport (MPM) to the cruise terminal or the city center, the travel time by taxi is approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis are available at the airport, although it is advisable to agree on the fare in advance, as taximeters are not always common. Additionally, various private transfer services offer comfortable and reliable door-to-door rides to the port, taking about 30 minutes. Many cruise lines also organize their own shuttle services for their passengers if needed.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the long flight journey and possible time differences, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Maputo is highly recommended. This allows you to acclimatize and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city before embarkation. The cruise terminal is located near the Baixa, the lively city center, which you can reach from the terminal in about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. An overnight stay also enables a relaxed journey to the ship on embarkation day.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
Even during the voyage, the following applies: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.

Tuk-Tuks and Taxis
Numerous tuk-tuks and official taxis are available directly at the terminal to take visitors to highlights further away, such as the Polana district or the fish market. These vehicles offer a flexible option for individual city tours and also bring you quickly to the viewpoints along the coast.
Chapas (Minibuses)
The local minibuses known as Chapas operate on fixed routes throughout the entire city and offer an authentic way to get around. They are an affordable addition to the tourist options and, thanks to their high frequency, efficiently connect the port area with all parts of the city.

Most cruise lines provide reliable shuttle buses that run regularly between the port terminal and the Mercado Central. These buses offer a direct connection and, thanks to fixed departure times, bring you punctually and comfortably back to the security area of the port.
On Foot
Since the port directly borders the historic Baixa district, the way back from the central station or the Casa de Ferro is easy to find. The route leads through well-visible streets and can be managed safely and directly on foot thanks to the prominent landmarks and the short distance.
