Port information & tips for Maputo

Maputo, the sun-drenched capital of Mozambique, welcomes travelers as one of the most charming destinations on the East African coast. The city uniquely combines Portuguese colonial architecture with modern African flair and offers a pleasant, Mediterranean atmosphere thanks to its wide avenues lined with jacaranda trees and its location on Delagoa Bay. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the grand Estação Central dos Caminhos de Ferro main station, the historic Fortaleza de Maputo, and the Casa de Ferro designed by Gustave Eiffel. Cruise ships dock at the Maputo Cruise Terminal, which directly borders the historic Baixa district, allowing guests to easily reach the city center's most important sights and lively markets on foot.

Maputo is a fascinating fly & cruise destination in southern Africa, typically reached by long-haul flight for guests from the DACH region. The cruise port is centrally located and well-connected, although an overnight stay in advance is recommended due to the long journey.

Airplane

Maputo International Airport (MPM) is the nearest airport and is located only about 3 to 5 kilometers northwest of the city center and port. The flight time from major European hubs such as Copenhagen is about 11 hours for direct flights, which indicates the need for an early arrival. The airport is the largest in Mozambique and an important hub for LAM Mozambique Airlines with several intercontinental connections.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Maputo International Airport (MPM), you can reach the cruise port and surrounding hotels comfortably by taxi, with the journey to the city center taking about 10 minutes. It is recommended to agree on the fare before starting the journey, as many taxis do not use meters. In addition, various providers offer private transfer services from the airport to hotels or directly to the cruise terminal, guaranteeing a stress-free and comfortable arrival. Some cruise lines also provide their own shuttle services.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long international flight times, it is advisable to arrive in Maputo at least one day before embarkation to prevent flight delays and start your cruise relaxed. Numerous hotels in the city center of Maputo, including well-known houses such as the Polana Serena Hotel, the Southern Sun Maputo, or the Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence Maputo, offer comfortable accommodation. Many of these hotels are centrally located and provide easy access to the port as well as exploration of the city before embarkation.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

Also during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
