Port information & tips for Taolanaro
Taolanaro, also known as Fort Dauphin, is a fascinating gateway to the wild southeast of Madagascar and impresses with its untouched nature. The town is picturesquely situated on a peninsula between emerald green mountains and the Indian Ocean, offering visitors a pure, authentic atmosphere thanks to its secluded location. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the Nahampoana Reserve with its friendly lemurs and the beautiful Libanona Beach, which promises both relaxation and spectacular views of the coast. Cruise ships dock at the modern deep-water port, Port d’Ehoala, which is located about ten kilometers from the town center. From here, travelers can easily reach the town by shuttle and explore the unique flora and fauna of this special region.

Travel from the DACH region is primarily by air, as the port is located in a region with sometimes challenging road infrastructure and cruise ships utilize the modern Ehoala Port.
Airplane
Travel from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland first takes you to Antananarivo International Airport (TNR) in Madagascar. From there, daily domestic flight connections exist to Tôlanaro Airport (FTU), also known as Marillac Airport. This smaller airport serves the region around Taolanaro. Due to the long flight times and the necessary domestic flight, arriving at least one day before the scheduled embarkation is recommended.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Tôlanaro Airport (FTU), you can reach the port or your pre-cruise hotel comfortably by taxi or via private transfer services. Providers such as MadaAssist offer various options, including budget, van, and 4x4 transfers, to bring you safely and reliably to your destination. Although Ehoala Port is located near the city of Tolagnaro, transfers from the cruise terminal to the city are typically organized by shuttle.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the long flight and the time difference, staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel in Taolanaro is highly recommended to start your cruise adventure relaxed. In Taolanaro, you will find various hotels and accommodations that allow for a pleasant stay before embarkation. This gives you sufficient time to acclimatize and explore the surrounding area before your ship sets sail.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
