Port information & tips for Nosy Iranja

Nosy Iranja is a paradisiacal jewel off the northwestern coast of Madagascar and is considered one of the most spectacular destinations in the Indian Ocean. The "Turtle Island" impresses with its untouched nature, crystal-clear turquoise water, and a relaxed, tropical atmosphere. Highlights include the iconic, snow-white sandbank connecting the island parts of Nosy Iranja Be and Nosy Iranja Kely, and the historic lighthouse designed by Gustave Eiffel on the hilltop. Furthermore, the island offers ideal conditions for observing sea turtles on its protected beaches. As the island does not have a permanent pier, cruise ships anchor offshore and bring guests by tender boat directly to the beach of Nosy Iranja Be, from where the small fishing village and the natural beauties are easily accessible on foot.

Nosy Iranja is a picturesque archipelago off the northwest coast of Madagascar, primarily serving as an anchorage for cruise ships. Direct arrival by car or train to a traditional terminal is not possible here; the islands are typically reached by tender boat from the cruise ships. Due to the remoteness and the long journey from the DACH region, a pre-cruise overnight stay on the mainland or one of the larger islands serving as a base is strongly recommended.

Airplane

For travel to Madagascar from the DACH region, Ivato International Airport (TNR) near Antananarivo is the primary gateway. From here, a connecting flight to Fascene Airport (NOS) on the island of Nosy Be is required, which is the closest airport to Nosy Iranja. Alternatively, Amborovy Airport (MJN) near Mahajanga also handles domestic flights.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Fascene Airport (NOS) on Nosy Be, located about 45 kilometers from the islands of Nosy Iranja, transfers are usually arranged by taxi or organized shuttle to a harbor, from where the journey continues by boat to Nosy Iranja. The drive to the harbor on Nosy Be takes about 30 to 60 minutes, followed by a boat ride that can vary depending on the departure point and weather conditions.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long international flights and further travel within Madagascar, an overnight stay on Nosy Be before embarkation is recommended. Various hotels and resorts are available there, allowing for a relaxed start to your cruise adventure. Many cruise lines also organize pre- and post-programs including transfers and hotel stays.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
