It is a port that serves primarily as a "port of call," meaning that ships dock here, but no full passenger processing for embarkation or disembarkation takes place; arrival and departure are by tender boat.
Airplane
Arrival at the cruise port of Diego Suarez for guests from the DACH region is usually by plane. The nearest airport is Antsiranana-Arrachart Airport (DIE). International travelers first fly to Ivato International Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, from where connecting flights to Antsiranana (DIE) with Madagascar Airlines/Tsaradia are offered in approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours flight time. It is recommended to plan a full day buffer for the connection in Antananarivo.
Transfer & Local Arrival
From Antsiranana Airport (DIE) to the port or to hotels in the city, the distance is only 3 to 5 kilometers, making transfers by taxi take only about 4 minutes. At the port area itself, which is an active working port, local transport such as tuk-tuks (bajaj) and taxis are available after the tender, taking you comfortably to the city center about 1.5 to 2 kilometers away. It is advisable to negotiate the fare before starting the journey.

Since Diego Suarez is not an embarkation port for cruises, but a port of call during the voyage, there is no dedicated terminal infrastructure for embarkation. For a relaxed start to your Madagascar experience, a pre-cruise overnight stay in Antsiranana can still be worthwhile to explore the city and its surroundings before your cruise ship arrives. In Antsiranana, there are various hotels in different categories that also offer airport transfers. Given the long journey from Europe, arrival at least one day before the ship's scheduled call is recommended to avoid jet lag and compensate for possible flight delays.

You can reach the city center of Antsiranana in about 15 to 20 minutes via a steady climb from the harbor basin. The path leads you directly to Rue Colbert, where you can discover numerous colonial buildings as well as small shops and simultaneously enjoy the lively atmosphere of the city.
Taxi
Classic taxis wait for passengers at the port exit and are ideal for longer excursions into the surrounding area. Thanks to the local knowledge of the drivers, you can comfortably reach more distant destinations such as the beach of Ramena or the Montagne d’Ambre National Park.

Antsiranana City Center
Located directly at the harbor, the center captivates with its nostalgic atmosphere featuring magnificent colonial buildings and lively markets; furthermore, the charming streets can be perfectly explored during a relaxed walk.
Plage de Ramena
This extensive sandy beach is only a short drive away and, thanks to its crystal-clear water and inviting fish restaurants, is the ideal destination for a relaxing swim stop on the Indian Ocean.
The Three Bays (Les Trois Baies)
The consecutive bays of Sakalava, Pigeon, and Dunes offer breathtaking views of untouched dune landscapes and are perfectly accessible thanks to organized tours; at the same time, the route provides spectacular photo opportunities of the prominent table mountain Nosy Lonjo.
Ramena Beach

On Foot
Since the city center of Antsiranana is elevated above the bay, a beautiful walk of about 15 minutes leads comfortably downhill directly to the guarded port entrance. The path is easy to find thanks to the clear street layout and also offers wonderful views of the bay and the striking Pain de Sucre mountain.
