Port information & tips for Takoradi

Takoradi, Ghana's dynamic "Oil City," welcomes travelers as a fascinating gateway to the west of the country, directly on the Gulf of Guinea. The city charmingly combines an industrial spirit of optimism with warm West African hospitality, while also offering deep insights into the region's colonial history. Cultural highlights include the vibrant Market Circle, an impressive circular marketplace in the heart of the city, and the historic Fort Orange, which towers majestically over the coast as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cruise ships dock at the modern multi-purpose terminal in Takoradi Port, from where the city center, just around three kilometers away, and the traditional neighboring city of Sekondi can be reached easily and quickly thanks to short travel distances.

Takoradi, an important port city in Ghana, is primarily accessible to cruise passengers from the DACH region via a Fly & Cruise arrival. Due to the long journey and to relax before embarkation, a stay on the previous day is recommended. The port has a well-connected structure that allows transfers from the nearest airport.

Airplane

Arrival usually takes place via Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra, which is served from European hubs. From Accra, you can take a domestic flight to Takoradi Airport (TKD), which is located about 3 kilometers from Takoradi city center and around 7 kilometers from the port. The flight time between Accra and Takoradi is approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Takoradi Airport (TKD), you can easily reach the port by taxi, a ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Alternatively, traveling from Accra to Takoradi by car is also possible. The main connecting road is the Coastal Road (N1), which connects Accra and Takoradi. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Transfer services from hotels or cruise lines can also be booked.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long journey from the DACH region and to ensure a relaxed start to your cruise, an overnight stay in Accra or directly in Takoradi before embarkation day is recommended. Numerous hotels in Takoradi offer comfortable accommodations, often with the option to organize airport transfers.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
