Port information & tips for Abidjan
Abidjan, the vibrant economic heart of Ivory Coast, fascinates as the "Manhattan of West Africa" directly on the shores of the extensive Ébrié Lagoon. The metropolis impresses with its glittering skyline and a dynamic mix of modern architecture and West African warmth. Cultural highlights include the futuristic Cathédrale Saint-Paul, the bustling business and administrative district Le Plateau, and the colorful Marché de Treichville, which offer deep insight into the city's life thanks to their diversity. Cruise ships dock at the Port Autonome d’Abidjan at the central Quai de Fruit, from where guests can easily reach the city center, just about five kilometers away, in around fifteen minutes by taxi or shuttle while discovering the fascinating energy of this contrast-filled coastal gem.
The port of Abidjan, a major hub in West Africa, is strategically located on the Ébrié Lagoon in the Treichville district. Cruise ships dock at industrial terminals within the port, with the exact berth varying depending on availability. Direct accessibility from the terminals to tourist destinations is not possible due to the industrial nature of the surrounding area.
Airplane
For guests from the DACH region, traveling by plane to Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport (ABJ), also known as Port Bouët Airport, is the most common and convenient option. It is located approximately 10 to 16 kilometers southeast of Abidjan's center. Direct flights from European cities provide good accessibility, though flight times should be considered based on the distance.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Abidjan Airport (ABJ) to the cruise terminal, you will need between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on traffic. It is strongly recommended to book a private transfer or shuttle in advance to ensure fixed prices and a smooth process. Taxis are also available, though it is advisable to negotiate the fare beforehand. The SOTRA lagoon ferry service offers an hourly connection across the Ébrié Lagoon, but it can only be used after a taxi ride to the Gare Lagunaire de Treichville and is less practical for direct travel to the ship.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Abidjan is recommended. This allows you to start your cruise relaxed, without the stress of traveling directly after a long flight. Numerous hotels in the center of Abidjan (Le Plateau) or near the airport offer comfortable options to acclimatize before embarkation. Some cruise lines also offer attractive pre-cruise hotel packages that include transfers to the port.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually provide a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
